Downtown....the old and the new

Sunday afternoon...............visit to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.......the very interesting Dinosaur Exhibit showing recent new discoveries. Will now add 'Jurassic Park' to my Netflix Queue. This exhibit, viewed alongside a granddaughter, has tweaked more interest - I want to learn more about these long extinct creatures.

On leaving the museum, we walked through downtown. Surrounded by cranes and scaffolding hoisting steel and concrete, new skyscraper tall buildings rise from the pavements and squares. We searched for the old buildings, the brick walls, wood window frames, and lovingly painted trims. They are there, the ones that survived the wreckers ball.

We found a little restaurant inside the old, now extinct - like the dinosaurs, Raleigh Times newspaper building. The tin ceilings, mottled plaster walls and peeling wood remains - the character and history draws us in................we love the old.

  1. This post took me back to grade school and going with my class on the bus to the science museum. We had fun even though it was not my favorite subject. Then I was transported to the first time I went to the British Natural History museum and saw the dinosaurs standing out against the beauty of the amazing building.

Briggs Hardware is a gorgeous building isn't it! I can see why you would like the restaurant found in the old newspaper building. How fun that you had a day out with Jasmin.

Still feeling under the weather but on and off checking blogs. I hope to have a clearer head soon and will get back to blogging again.

    Hugs ~

  5. Interesting way to spend a Sunday, my boys were always fascinated by dinosaurs, I rather think there's a good section on them at the Museum of Natural History in London but I blushingly have to admit that I've never been there! Enjoyed your January garden pictures too, I would think that snow is a rare experience in your part of the US.
