The hardest part of painting a room?
PICKING THE COLOR OF COURSE!
At last they've come up with little sample pots......................and by the time I finish with these I'll have blown the entire paint budget and won't be able to afford the gallons!
Actually, at under $4.00 a pop, they really are worthwhile if you just can't choose from those five thousand shades of neutral on minuscule pieces of card stock. No longer beige, cream, linen and ivory, there are now names such as 'Cincinnatian Hotel Hannaford'.........and to make things worse this is the color I may just end up with.
Slapping stripes of paint all over the bedroom yesterday afternoon was frustrating. There was no sun - not that the sun shines directly in that room - and on every wall each color looked different. Seems one has to just say to heck with it, I'll choose this one...........then hope it looks OK once the entire job is finished. If not, just paint over it when dh is out of town!
I'm still looking at this room for inspiration even though my room looks nothing like this yet - but it has the elements I love.

So this color card may be my choice as they are yellowed neutrals, good for a sunless room, Lyndhurst Stone, Cliveden Sandstone (very British sounding), and for some reason, the peculiar named Cincinnatian Hotel Hannaford. Any Ohio gals out there know if there's a Hotel Hannaford? If so, hope it's posh and not some sleazy place in the wrong part of town!
Of course he's no help - when I showed him two stripes of color I was considering for the stairwell and upstairs hallway which will also be painted, and asked him which one, he pointed and I immediately said "no way, much too dark" to which he said "OK the other one then". Absolutely no help whatsoever!!!
It was then time to find a comfortable chair, pour a cup of tea, and stare at all those stripes again.

Hi Mary,
ReplyDeletefun to read about Your decoration project! I think we women ask our queations in a typical female way, like -darling, should I wear the red or black dress? -red he sais.
-but i look fat in that dress!
Love the picture of the sofa with striped linen!

Ok, I guess I really do have to get painting the closet doors and the trim in the guest room. i have put it off long enough!

Hello Mary...I sent the headboard from our bed, with J, yesterday, to be painted at a car shop. It's going into the guest room. We traded beds with that room. That bed is now in our room and our bed is upstairs...there is a sweet little white chest in the guest room, I want the headboard(natural Alder) to match. J took a drawer pull for comparison. Soon, I had a call from J, asking just which color white. It is truly amazing how many shades of white, there are? We decided Bavarian Cream is the perfect match. Doesn't that sound delicious!
ReplyDeleteI would love to paint the upstairs guest room. Just about every room in our home is Laura Ashley Gold 3, a wonderful neutral. But I've been hankerin' for a blue room, lately.
I'm loving your adventure!

Well Mary, I hope you do like your choices. It is hard to pick and I usually go to the sample papers in the store and just wing it. Of course, I really don't paint very often.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary I am following your decorating project with interest. It is always so hard to pick a color even if you know what you want because colors look different in the bright sun, cloudy day, night, in a corner, or the center of a wall that gets lots of sun. I have found that once everything in the room is complete and there are pictures on the wall and curtains and other fabrics and accessories are added that the color changes again! Usually by then it all comes together just right and you can sit back and sigh, "Ah yes, just about perfect!"
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the process. Rhondi
The color I ultimately chose (after much agonizing) for my recent bathroom re-do is called Bread and Butter, for heaven's sake. It's actually a lovely apricot color. I wanted cream on my trim, and the word "cream" was in the name of the paint I selected. Unfortunately, it looks white. Oh, well. I will change it some day but later when I've forgotten about the whole bathroom mess.

You are so funny Mary! I think your decorating adventures are lots of fun to read. I looked up the hotel and it is nice but not what I would call posh. Humm...does that change your mind about the paint??? :) The paint will always look different on the different walls. What about taking two shades instead of one. It might help you enjoy the lighting in the room better by using various shades on various walls. I am considering going more red (my favorite color) in my living room as we freshen it up a bit. I am keeping the red and want to do a bit more of it and changing the pitiful sand yellow. It just looks old, tired and 90s to me. Now to convince Jos I need new curtains. Oh that reminds me...what color are you thinking for the stairwell? I used the two shade trick for mine to create a brighter look upstairs. Only problem is that it too is ready to be refreshed. Ten years looking at the current walls has taken its toll. Want to come help paint here?

Gosh, I do so empathize with your paint selection quandary, having been there many a time myself! Those little chips are impossible for determining how the room will look. I just don't have the "vision" to imagine it. And what is it with our dh's that they don't seem to really care....oh well! It is so much fun, despite the work, to make over a room that it's worth all the bother.
ReplyDeleteI agree, paint color names these days are very unusual and creative....they might make a very interesting and humorous post all by themselves!
Oh, it's just horrible, isn't it? I'm going through the same thing with my dining room color which will hopefully also work in my masterbedroom and laundry room. Good luck to you! Love your inspiration pic.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you there, Mary! I'm still deciding on my paint colours. Can't wait to see what you decide on! ~ Lynda xo
ReplyDeleteI see why you like that room, it's beautiful. I know you will come up with just the right color.

Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou could always go for a harlequin look and use up all your little pots :>)
Seriously, though, choosing the right paint needs time and gentle consideration. I'm sure, when you decide it will be just right :>)
I love the picture you have for inspiration but keep reminding yourself it's not real, someone will have dismatled it after the photo was taken...haha!
Warm wishes Angela
I know how hard it is to choose paint! Love your inspiration room. Good luck! Looking forward to the finished room.
