Eating Out in Maine

Remember this scenario? Just about every parent has done this. Coerced our children into tasting a new to them food. "Come on, just one bite". "It's good for you, nutritious and delicious". "Don't you want to be a gourmand when you grow up?". "Close your eyes and just swallow the d--- thing". Yes, know you're not supposed to do that to your kids, but when you know something is so yummy and delicious you hate to think they're missing the taste and texture.....................of a fried clam!!!

We always stop here on the little causeway in Kennebunkport, Maine for fried clams. Not the juicy, slimy, dip in melted butter, open mouth and slurp down 'steamers'. The just out of the bay, quick deep fried, golden, crispy, little critters, dipped in spicy cocktail sauce, chewed a bit and swallowed with an "ah, these darned things are fabulous, pass them back over here please".

We try to get one of three outdoor rustic benches on the deck in back of the Clam Shack. We can watch the ducks swimming below, the swifts flying by, and the whale watching boats come and go.
Did you know that grandchildren are no different from your children. Sometimes they have to be coerced also. Jasmin has eaten most things we've offered on our travels. There was Seche (Cuttlefish) and Pissaladiere (like a pizza with 10 tons of sliced onions, anchovies and black olives) in France. In England she like everything, especially my second cousin's cheese scones, and at the local pub, the cheese baps (rolls) washed down with elderberry soda. In Spain she sat at a sidewalk cafe in Figueras and tucked into spicy tapas for lunch.........while we four adults tossed back a couple of bottles of the best chilled Spanish rose wine ever!
But............take a look at this face, it says it all!

As Granddad tucked into his delicious golden fried, crispy clams, Jasmin decided no way............and, sadly, she missed out on a tasty New England delicacy.
Needless to say, DH and I had no problem eating her share!

Maine was beautiful. We'll be back for fried clams, lobster and steamers some day soon I hope. (Perhaps she'll try them next time..................and love 'em hopefully).

  5. My daughter was the same way, but she did try Oyster Rockerfella with me which I must say would not look as appetizing as fried clams! I love fried clams too!

  10. Fried clams is one of my favorites! Jasmin honey, sorry you didn't like them...but that's more for me!

Mary, on my very first trip to Maine a couple of years ago, I had some of the best seafood I've ever eaten. And then, you mention Spanish Rose'. Sadly, many Americans equate Rose' with that awful white zinfandel. If they could only taste the fruity, slightly dry spanish variety, it would be more popular and less hard to find here.

    Now I'm starving! Chris

  11. I know Kennebunkport too, another place I usually visit, it's only a short drive from Rye where my friends live - but I'm with Jasmine on the fried clams - you can have my share too:) I love the Maine coast, there's something about it that really appeals to me, shall hopefully be seeing it again in late September.

  12. Hi Mary! Thanks for stopping by I always love to see where you have traveled to. Jasmin is as sweet as a button. I so enjoy visiting with her. I know how they like to have a follower and they love to have someone blog to them. My two little grand daughters just got blogs. They are big Michael Jackson fans, so they wanted to set up a blog. Their Mom helped them. I will have the girls blog to Jasmin. Destiny is 12, she will be starting the 6th grade, and Isabel is 9 she will be in the 4th grade. Jasmin would be a good little friend for them. Loved the big boats, I would want to sit where I could watch them come in also. Country Hugs My Friend, Sherry

  14. I was coerced into trying steamers when i was a kid by a well meaning relative. They claimed the more of them I ate, the more I would like them! I made it to 3 and knew I would never like them. It's the texture thing, I guess. I do like fried clams on occasion, just not many. The squishy belly gets to me after a few.

Have fun in the West, there are some well known anatomical parts that Jasmine may want to stay away from there ;-)
