Yellowstone......................

.....................Nature's Amusement Park.
We didn't see a lot of wildlife in the national park this trip. Bison must have been in hiding, bears were nowhere in the area we covered, however this beautiful elk did stop traffic and we were able to get out of the car and take some photos as it grazed nearby. Then, despite a crowd of humans clicking cameras, it raised it's head and posed for us!

We crossed the Continental Divide several times during this western trip.

Some pictures of the fascinating hot mineral springs, pools of colors like jewels scattered across the landscape. Geysers, mud pools, and springs here in the park are the largest concentration of geothermal features in the world.

Jasmin enjoying the beauty of Yellowstone National Park......the very first national park established in 1872.
Fountains of scalding water burst high into the air from some geysers, others bubble and spit in murky depths.

........................and of course, we waited almost an hour with a front row seat, for OLD FAITHFUL, the most famous 120 foot waterspout, to erupt. This occurs every 60-80 minutes and sitting just 300 feet away, we felt the spray which was exciting.
Leaving Yellowstone we headed to breathtaking Montana.......and a road problem!

  7. My only trip to Yellowstone occurred in winter. Gaa - it was awful. We rode in on snowmobiles and my boobs were almost shaken off (sorry to be so indelicate, but they did hurt for days aferward after those rutted roads.) We came so close to a buffalo by the side of the road - I mean, we were on SNOWMOBILES WITH NO PROTECTION - that I could see the frost on his eyelashes. And then, Old Faithful was a disappointment. Apparently it does not blow nearly as spectacularly as in the summer.

Come to North Dakota sometime and I will show you through Theodore Roosevelt National Park at Medora, and I will ALMOST guarantee you a buffalo sighting. Our Venezuelan foreign exchange student was so excited to finally see some "Boofalos".

  9. Mary,

Your trip is becoming a very educational experience for me!! I had no idea Old Faithful did it's thing every 60~80 minutes. I thought more like every 60~80 years! lol!! I must say, my geography and U.S. History lessons are failing me as I get older! But that is one of the great parts of blogging, you can become an armchair traveller.

Loved your trip through Yellowstone. Never been there either!! The bison is a very handsome animal (he was posing as if he thought so himself!!)

    xoxo
