Take up your pen...........

I have plans to write letters as promised.

Some of you will remember the secretary I put in the guest room last year ~ part of the French inspired decorating project? Even before I spent October in France I was already embracing the French look. I've no idea why I'm becoming a Francophile this late in life. To think I lived for almost 19 years just across the English Channel, almost able to see the distant coastline on a clear day, but never made it to France then!
Maybe it's because part of my English family live there now. Much of it revolves around simplicity and the old ways. Living, or staying for a while, in an old village truly makes you see life differently............perhaps writing by hand is all part of the magic.

Pen, ink, sealing wax and seal..............lovely paper, envelopes.

The desk, a lamp to light the room as dusk falls, lavender in glass to perfume the air..........
.............a chair nearby. Take up the pen, the words will come.

Hope you have decided to write by hand to someone special.

  1. Lovely post and blog, Mary.

I found you through Linda at Frenchless in France. Love the desk! It's beautiful, as are the writing accoutrements.

    Happy writing!

  3. Your writing desk is gorgeous! I write by hand often as it seems more personal to me not to mention that I like the old Victorian ways of doing things:) I always write on pretty stationary (usually with roses). There is something special when you find a hand-written note waiting in the mailbox!

  5. Dear Ms. Mary ... may I first say your writing area is so pretty and comfortable. Just yesterday, though not with all of the goodies you have shown us today, I put good pen in hand and wrote a note to a dear friend who lives back in MN. We used to play a lot of tennis together and we sang together in a women's singing group. I couldn't help but notice the metal looking container on one of your shelves .. I have one that's similar (plain tin look)and now realize I MUST paint it.

  8. The most I have done so far is to write two postcards while I was in Florida. Not the same, but one was to Heidi so she will be happy.
She is like you and likes mail to drop through her mail slot in her door.

  9. Your secretary is so beautiful. It would be a delight to sit there to pen a letter. I remember as a girl, I found a cigar box with war metals and other momentos including writing nibs. I asked my mother what they were. The box was things from her father. I then said I wanted to learn calligraphy and guess what Santa brought me that year? I enjoy calligraphy still to this day.

    Hugs ~

  10. I have always wanted a secretary to sit and write letters from. I thought I didn't have room in my house, but I could put mine in a guest room too! Thank you for the inspiration!

  11. What a romantic spot you have where you can do your writing! I am practicing with a writing set like that - it takes some getting used to, but I'm in love with the idea of it. I'm going to hang in there! ~Lori

  13. Who would not be inspired to write by hand with such beautifully romantic surroundings? Perhaps it would even improve my handwriting.

Stay warm and cozy, Mary. It's coming!

  16. I love the idea of a handwritten letter. And such a nice writing box. I got a wax/stamp kit from the same manufacturer when I visited Versailles. In fact I used it just recently on some family photo gifts for Christmas. Letterwriting is almost a lost art - thanks for keeping it alive.
    Hugs, Laura
