~~~~~~Time for a fashion article perhaps~~~~~~
I've always loved Winter clothes. Moving South many years ago I really missed dressing for the chilly months. Coming from damp old England, then New England where the Winter months could be brutal, I found I no longer required heavy wool overcoats and slacks, itchy turtleneck sweaters and snow boots. But I've missed these. I feel they can be so much more elegant than the basic warm weather uniform that many of us can wear almost year round in the South.
I was always a bit of a 'clothes horse' who grew up with a mother who sewed the latest fashions for me and then taught me dressmaking skills. As years have passed my lifestyle has changed. I now wear more casual clothes as opposed to the dressy outfits I wore when I was a working gal!
Although I didn't visit Paris in October, I did spend a couple of days in Aix-en-Provence. This is one very fashionable city. The shops were wonderful and their Winter offerings were tempting. Only a French woman can wear a scarf and make it look so fabulous. Aix is full of students from all around the world, they certainly knew how to pull neat looking outfits together on a budget, sometimes just adding that fabulous scarf or a knitted hat.
I love texture........knitted scarves, sweaters, cardigans.
I'm really for neutrals when it comes to color - give me black, brown, oatmeal and grey and my wardrobe is happy!
I've been kicking myself for not buying a pair of fabulous French boots while in Aix ~ not snow boots, elegant soft leather dress boots in a gorgeous, perhaps unusual, color.
Well I did decide to buy tall leather boots in December. After all there's no rule that says Southern ladies can't wear boots in the sunshine, is there? I'm so happy because with the temperatures down in the single digits at night these past few days, it's not only boots with warm pants tucked in, it's a turtleneck, a cardigan, a soft wool muffler, a pull on hat and a pair of wool gloves that go up to the elbows! Add the LL.Bean faux sheepskin coat and what do you have, a vision from Winter up North of course!
Do you like the latest fashions? Do you even care what's in style? Do you think current styles are mediocre/boring? Where do you prefer to shop for clothes ~ large department stores crammed with racks of clothes and designer brands; small national chains such as JJill and Chico's; locally owned boutiques; Target, K-Mart/Sears and similar stores; thrift/vintage shops?
I'm always a season behind when it comes to fashion. By the time I decide that I like something the fashion world has moved on to something else. I really don't pay too much attention to what I wear, I just must be comfortable. I do know that I won't be wearing any mini skirts. I've really been bundling up here in Paris where it has been really cold, hardly out of the 20's but this morning I woke up and it was 46 degrees. Hard to know what to put on.
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest and say that I go for comfort rather than style these days. Given a bottomless wallet I love classic clothes, slightly tailored, they never go out of fashion.
ReplyDeleteThese days I mostly wear trousers, navy or grey although I do have a pair ofwhat I call clover coloured ones. Very rarely wear a dress mostly skirts with sweaters. I have a lovely classic twin set in a dusky pink I am very fond of. I never wear black, its just not my colour, I look like a corpse, it takes all the colour from my face.....nasty. I do admire people who can wear it though.I have a friend who looks superb in it.
I used to buy a lot of my clothes from Marks and Spencer, but no longer they are way too expensive and the style seems to have taken a walk.
I buy from large department stores like John Lewis in the UK they have franchises of various well known labels there Planet and Windsmoor, French Connection, etc.
I had and colours done amny years ago and tend to stick to those guide lines, I cannot wear 'muddy' colours as a spring I need bright clear coulours, sometimes it can be difficulto find the right shades, so if I see something and its right I buy it. Mine is a capsule wardrobe, garments that can be mixed and matched for different occasions, that way I do not have to lug huge suitcases around when we go on holiday.
I love French style, french women seem to be born with a unique sense of stly the rest of us have to work hard to achieve....Paris is one of my most favourite cities!! Will I ever get there again, I wonder????????????
I love Winter clothes, itchy turtle necks too!
ReplyDeleteBut here in Brittany...fashion? No way. the Bretons love extraordinary assymetric skirts, highly patterned jumpers, polyester blouses....
No, it's back to good old M and S for me, especially as i tend to live in fleece and jeans! (Except in Paris of course!)
Don't even get me started on this topic! I HATE the way I dress. But as a plus-sized person, the selection that is offered really stinks! I can't remember the last time I bought clothing that I was really happy about. I go into the store, and almost everything has Empire waists - which are lovely, but I can't wear them! The waistline hits me in the middle of my boobs...NOT a good look! I really wish plus-size stores would cater more to women who truly are plus-sized! And what's with the horrid, tacky prints that they put on so much of the plus-size clothing? Just because I'm big doesn't mean I have bad taste! My ankles swell...I don't WANT to wear cropped pants! It seems that when I do find something I might like, they have 20 of them in one size...not mine. I've tried mail order too without much success.
ReplyDeleteSorry for ranting, but this topic really gets me fired up! I would love to buy clothes that I like and feel good about. You ladies who are the size you should be...count yourselves very fortunate!
I found your blog a few weeks ago and feel as though I've found a new friend. Now you tell us your favorite colors for clothing and I know I've found my twin. Give me classic items in black, brown, oatmeal and taupe; summer, winter whenever. I don't do color, too scary. Thanks for the wonderful travel guide to places I'll never see.
ReplyDeleteWe have something in common. My mother made all of my clothes (and formal gowns) and taught me to sew as well. When I was a young, financially struggling mom with four children and a husband in school I made many of our clothes (minus hubby's.) You would love living here in the high desert of Central Oregon. Much of the year is just what you enjoy in terms of wardrobe. I have enjoyed browsing vintage and second-hand stores for years. Many bargains to be found. Shopping in general is somewhat limited in my part of the world so I also shop online. Enjoy your Sunday.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I am a Victorian at heart and therefore dress in the Victorian style everyday. Fortunately lace and velvet is very 'In' right now so I don't look too out of place-lol. I wear skirts most all of the time and when not at work I wear hats. I think they are wonderful and really make the look. Cameos, pearls, and anything fru-fru go along with my outfits. I shop primarily at thrift shops as we have some wonderurl ones in town. When I want to splurge I go to the consignment shop downtown. I also wear vintage clothing (from the Edwadian era to the 1960's brocade)when possible to work and on weekends. I can non longer wear high heels as my knees ache when I do so 'Maryjanes' in every color and style fill my closet:) This is a fun discussion. Thanks for posting it:)
ReplyDeleteTo Lori - you were brave to be so candid here and my heart goes out to you. I have friends with the same problem who feel they have been left behind when it come to fashion because they don't fit the slim model mode. Do not give up dear - you can still find very nice styles, minus those hideous prints and empire styling which I too despise, if you have time to shop around. Pick monochromatic shades, not necessarily black, charcoal, dark green, aubergine, for tops and bottoms - add pattern and color just in a scarf or a cute hat - if you're a hat person, I am! Always wear bold jewelery - yeah we tall gals get to display big necklaces, pins and beautiful earrings - and don't forget a big gorgeous bag and lovely shoes or boots.
ReplyDeleteI'm so enjoying your blog - having such marvellous family photos to share is great isn't it?
Mary.
vintage for me!!! and the more layered the better...i think i am a fabric addict!
ReplyDeleteI like to wear bright colors and especially like colorful shoes. I don't follow fashion and buy most of my clothes at Goodwill. I like the challenge of finding clothing cheap and I like to find one of a kind items. If we had lots of money it might be different. My every day uniform is jeans and a shirt or sweater.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Rhondi
I LOVE that little cable knit shrug in the picture!! I love wearing turtle necks and would wear them year round if I could!
ReplyDeleteHello Mary, Did you find a chocolate pot? Smiling. I love your post about all the wonderful stylish clothes and boots. I like to shop in department stores for nice clothes in style with some designer clothes 'IF' they are on sale. When I worked I did have to be very professional. I worked in banking. I admit to loving more casual clothes now. I did buy some boots after Christmas last year for a great price. I love wearing them with a long skirt. I wore them to the Biltmore to keep my legs warm. Brrrr, it was so cold. Yes, we girls in the south can wear boots. I also wear lots of scarves in this cold weather. I think they are a great look, as well as practical.
ReplyDeleteI must run and cook dinner for my gang. Keep warm in this cold weather.
Love...Jeanne
I wish I could wear darling clothes, but I just don't have the 'build' for them. So, it's just clothes that don't seem to be with it or even classic for me. I always feel a little out of the loop.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Deborah
I am not a clothes shopper but love winter clothes too. I love the outdoors country look and the comfort of an old wool sweater. I am not into shoes at all anymore as I have to have orthopedic ankle boots specially made for my feet. They make them also look outdoor country for the most part and I find them a Godsend as I can walk again without a cane.
Hi Mary:
ReplyDeleteI am totally happy in my jeans and turtlenecks. I almost always have a sweater on too. I wear Clark shoes so only weat boots if it is necessary due to snow. I used to wear blazers to work but not anymore, since I am not working.
Since I knit, I do love yarn and wool is my favorite now.
