NOTHER FAVORITE FAMILY PHOTOGRAPH.
This is me with mother in the Summer of 1944 in my home town of Torquay in Devon. This park is still there and the flat grassy area behind us is still used for lawn bowling - one of those traditional English pastimes enjoyed by mostly retired gentleman and ladies. They are usually outfitted in cream flannel trousers and blazers, the ladies in white pleated skirts or dresses - and straw Panama hats or nifty caps are the classic headgear.

Lymington Gardens, Torquay
I know my mother, being an accomplished seamstress, made the blankets and pillows for my pram. Don't you love the basket strapped to the handle - vintage diaper bag most likely! I love how she looks so happy here.
We lived with my grandmother in her flat in an older house back in those trees - as my father was still serving in the Royal Air Force. Grandmother was evacuated from London to Devon to escape WWII bombing, however several bombs fell not far from this very area, being jettisoned by enemy planes before returning across the English Channel.
Be sure to visit Deborah at Pictures, Pots and Pens who hosts fun Friday's Favorite Family Foto where she will have the list of all today's participants.
As young as you were here, I can see you in this child's precious little dumplin' face. Yes, I can also see that your mother was very proud of you. This is a wonderful photo. Thank you, Mary.

Deborah
Yeah Deborah - Brits are known for feeding their babies WELL, they always seem to be chubby! Now, I guess the dumplin' face has returned with old age and eating TOO well, lol!! Speaking of which, hope you can make the upcoming luncheon!
ReplyDeleteMary.
Mary, What a great picture of Mother and Daughter!
ReplyDeleteI am working on an album of a trip my family took to Canada in 1945 when I was 4 1/2 years old. It is so much fun to look back and see where we came from!
(I have to learn how to transfer pictures to my computer.)Have a great weekend!

Oh, this one is wonderful! And the countryside in the background is lovely, too. What a precious photo!
ReplyDeleteThis photograph must be such a treasure to you. Even though I have quite a few pictures of me when I was an infant, the pictures I treasure most are the ones that have my parents in them, too. You and your mother reflect that bond which is eternal.
ReplyDeleteI spoke with Jeanne this morning, and she told me about the tentative plans. It all sounds like great fun.
What a treasure of a picture that is! Your mother looks like a very happy woman. I'm sure your smiling face made her feel that way. The basket is a great touch. I love your photo.
ReplyDeletetake care,

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful photo of you and your mother, Mary! In 1944, I was a well fed chubby cheeked infant, too!
ReplyDeleteAll I know about Torquay I've learned while reading fiction. When I saw the word Torquay in this post, I immediately saw the image you described, even before reading it.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful story, beautiful photograph. Just thought I'd pop over to your blog to see how you've been. As always, your stories and pictures bring a smile. You mentioned lawn bowling...I recently acquired 3 vintage lawn balls. Not a set, but they are lovely just as they are. They'll eventually go in hubby's office (display pieces) once the 'work' is complete on the home. Hope you and Bob are well. Take care.

What a great picture. We had one of those old fashioned baby buggies too. There's a pic of me, my two brothers and my sis (the one in the carriage) around somewhere. I'll have to see if I can find it and post it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo and you were just a darling baby. I adore pudgy babies! I agree...your mum was beaming with pride. I bet you were the first? Thanks for sharing this.
