August in the Garden

I haven't posted much about the garden lately. Gardening in the South can be a struggle. Just keeping things alive, green and blooming to provide some color in these 'dog days' of Summer becomes a full time job. Daytime temperatures hover around 100, nights stay hot, and the humidity envelopes me like a damp blanket as I step out the cottage door. Water restrictions still apply - only two days a week for a few hours - and we have had very little rain.
I smiled and gave thanks when a few welcome beauties greeted me yesterday morning as I took my garden walk.

Morning Glories climbing the front porch.

Lantana and sweet potato vine in the kitchen window box.

The surprise re-bloom of the clematis on the mailbox post.

Pretty veined petunia, wide awake, while the angel still snoozes through the heat of another Summer day ~ and I surrender to the beauty.

  1. Wonderful photos. My summer garden is a bit overgrown and unkept. It's on my to do list ..... now where's my list .......

  2. Oh, I so know what you mean. We are struggling over at our home, too. It is just too hot to stay outside. I went to the post office yesterday to mail a package, and I thought I was going to pass out just going from the car.

Our roses are blooming, but the blooms are so much smaller during the dry and hot summer. They will be back to their normal size in a couple more months. We do have a few blooms in pots - geraniums, salvia and impatiens.

I'm longing for some cooler weather, and lots of rain.

  3. Your garden is beautiful. I think everyone is suffering with the heat. It is unusually hot here and we are breaking records. I hear it may cool off mid week and maybe showers. I can hardly wait.

  4. Yes this heat is bad for our lawns and garden, but I see you have some beauties in yours. Love your sleeping angel.

  5. Your photos are lovely. I particularly like the morning glory. I grow them every year, but this year I planted seeds twice and they never grew. So disappointing.

I live in North Carolina too and the impatiens and lantana seem to be doing the best in my yard right now.

  10. Don't you just love the beauty and the hardiness of potato vine! I have the green variety in window boxes, also, but am using the purple this year as well. Love it!

And, your morning glories are spectacular!

    Happy Sunday!

  11. What beautiful flowers. You are managing to keep them going in spite of the heat and limited water.
I was so happy to hear from you today on my blog.
That is great you and Jasmin are taking French lessons together.

  13. Mary these are gorgeous!!

I harvested Endless Summer blooms, Friday. So happy we had them this year. Hope they dry nice.

I posted photos of our daughter and son in law's Alaskan cruise. Perhaps that will help you keep cool. They sure look good to me!

    Have a great week.

  14. Mary, your flowers look so lovely. In my garden (in this southern heat as well) the weeds are growing wonderfully and the flowers are struggling to stay alive and bloom. Your pictures make me want to work harder to get things looking "neat" again!

You've had a lot going on these days! Wishing you rest and good health and happiness!

    Hugs,
    Lynn

  15. Bravo for managing to keep those lovely blooms despite the heat. Up here we have to contend with deer that eat everything, so gardening is a challenge.

  16. Summer in August is a little rough here too although the nights cool down and there isn't too much humidity. It all sort of gets crispy around the edges. Anyway, your photos make it look like your yard is lush, green, and full of flowers.

  22. Morning glories are aptly named...they are rather glorious, especially their colors. I'm fascinated by that spiky leaf...does that belong to the deep purple and pink morning glory? It's so different from the blue one!

  23. Hi Mary
My garden looks so sad this time of year. There are a few things blooming here and there, but with the heat and the drought and the deer, it's pretty pitiful! Dreaming about and planning your trip sounds like the ideal thing to get your mind off the heat. Adieu, Rhondi

  25. Aren't morning glories wonderful? I am a member of a local garden club called the Morning Glories. I just think their colors are stunning and love the way the color fades into the throat of the flower!

  26. Your flowers are so lovely, Mary. I am so glad they haven't wilted in the heat. That must be because of your TLC.

  28. Your garden is absolutely stunning, Mary. I just love it. I know what you're saying about that heat! Whew!
We're fortunate today though...it's been pouring all morning and certainly cooled off the temp. Not to mention it's great for my garden. I've done up a post for Thursday with some photos of what I recently found in my garden.
