Mary, Mary, quite contrary..........

...................how does your garden grow?
Yesterday afternoon I walked out on to the deck where daffodils are now popping up in containers..........................

...................over to the potting shed where the five leafed Akebia is sprouting and even has a few tiny purple bell flowers in bloom. I love this climber.

More daffodils pushing up through the mulch of oak leaves, golden buds bursting open.

These are King Alfred - huge blooms on strong stems.
This is a favorite ~ Ice Follies, pale and frothy like an ice skater's dress! A butterfly bush growing rapidly by the back fence.

This dainty blossom on a bush which is getting very large, fills an entire corner now ~ not sure of the name, it was a pass-along from a neighbor. Please can anyone tell me what it is ?

..................and this which is actually my current painting project! A perfect day to be outside armed with Heritage White spray paint. I'm almost ashamed to tell you how long I've taken to finish this piece. It is a sewing machine cabinet inherited from a dear friend five years ago! I've always intended to make it my bedside table. A yucky brown, I first painted it green about three years ago, but then.................well I decided to change my bedroom colors so it wasn't right. It's been stuck in the potting shed until yesterday when I carried it outside, washed it down, and took aim with the spray cans. It took three coats and looks quite good. I'll distress and wax it with BriWax once the paint has cured. Instead of replacing the metal decorative handle on the front I plan to add a resin applique such as a swag of roses, painted and distressed to make it look old and shabby. Maybe then, at long last, it will come inside and be put to good use.

  1. Love the pictures. I believe you are enjoying spring as much as I am.

I'm not sure about the plant with the white blooms, but I have seen it before.

    Have fun. Everything looks wonderful.

  2. Oh dear Mary! I just read your comment on my blog. GO BUY THE BUST TODAY!!! You are not being a copycat and I must have done okay that you even wanted to search for one. I think you would love having one. I hope to see a photo of her on your blog. Don't forget to name her. :)

I love your garden. It is really spring there. I have Ice Follies too at the cottage and they will be in bloom when I arrive later today. They were close to opening last week.

Love the sewing machine cabinet. What a pretty form it has. I will look forward to see it completed.

Have a marvelous weekend dear friend! Hi to Bob and it is good to hear he is out and about which must mean his back is better!

    Hugs ~

  5. Mary,

I checked with our resident plant expert here at work, and she says this is spirea aka bridal wreath.

And, that is what I was thinking of. I just couldn't remember the name.

  6. Mary, Mary, Opposite of Contrary,
    How Lovely Your Garden Grows!

We won't have daffodils in our gardens until April at the earliest, but they are now available in the stores. They're actually cheaper at the florist than at the grocers'. My yellow tulips are still good but once they're gone I'm going to pick up a couple of bunches of daffodils. They look great in my milk glass "vases" (drinking glasses).

  7. Mary,
Your garden is beautiful. I have to laugh because one aspect looks just like mine; the carpet of oak leaves under everything.
Your walk Wednesday was gorgeous too. Gotta love Spring!

  9. hey there,
I just stumbled onto your blog. I am also from NC, near Raleigh. I was looking through your post about the decorater from Susanna's that came to your house. I know you loved that! I have been to Susanna's Antiques, it is a really neat place. Looks like you made some great finds there! Another great place in Raleigh, is Thieves Market Mall. It is an antique and consignment mall and also has some unique and wonderful things! You might want to check it out sometime. Enjoyed looking :)! Kim

  16. Maybe bridal wreath is right for the bush. I always thought those bridal wreath blooms were larger -- like the size of a nickel or quarter. This is smaller, and somehow I'm thinking it is the true, old-fashioned baby's breath. But I could well be wrong.
