Books and Blooms

.....This is a favorite Spring picture.....

It's currently on my refrigerator where I like to display something seasonal and lovely. These old books and jonquils speak quietly to me. I am in the process of aging some used books I brought home ~ and will display them on my shelves.........but only if I can get them to look this beautiful.
'Daffodils that come before the swallow dares,
And take the winds of March with beauty.'
...........William Shakespeare..........

I am anxious to see your books when complete.

  2. I adore old books. I even like the smell. Nothing else smells like an old book. And nothing is quite so intriging as the natural aging process on the bindings and cover and pages.Yours are beautiful.

  9. Mary, this really is the most evocative picture ever. it literally speaks volumes! I must say i have never thought of aging books but these books look very like some of the ones my daughter reads whilst in the bath and identical to one that actually shared the bath with her.....haha
    Warm wishes, Angela

  10. Nice picture! How do you age books? This is not a silly question, well maybe it is, but I would like to know the answer.

  11. I absolutely love that photo: two of my favorite things in the world. I also like the verse - I was not familiar with it.

I will come back later to read your other posts which I have missed.

  13. Hi anonymous! Aging books, well right now it's trial and error - and I only use really old books already beyond hope, a bit smelly and yellowed! When it rains - which hasn't been too often around here lately - I'm placing old books (covers removed) on the front steps and just letting Nature do it. They get wet, dry out, crinkle a bit.....and then I'll put them out again when it rains more. I've heard of soaking them in the sink so may speed things up a bit this way. The gummy stuff eventually peels off the spines.
I long to have those French blue pages - am thinking of a wash of watercolor paint once the 'aging' is completed - what do you think?
If this doesn't work I'll be combing the 'brocantes' when I return to France later this year.
    Mary.
