I love animals but prefer they be allowed to stay in their natural habits. I dislike circuses because of horror stories I've heard about the way the animals are housed, treated, and made to perform for humans. Therefore zoos are only on my list of places to visit.......occasionally.
The magnificent San Diego Zoo was a one time treat a few years ago. The National Zoo in Washington, D.C. I've visited a few times as I lived in that city in the '60's. The North Carolina Zoo is small compared to the first two and this was my third visit in the 30 years I've lived in this great state.
The visit this week was at the request of friends - we live equidistant from the zoo so it was also a chance to socialize. Sharing these photos with you........of the animals, not our friends!
Below is Wilhelm, known as Willy. He and his mate, she was not in the water on this day, are one of the positive zoo stories. This pair was actually rescued from a Mexican traveling circus. While performing in Puerto Rico it was discovered how abominably they were being housed (in tiny cages), underfed (they were extremely thin almost to the point of starved), and generally mistreated. The pair were taken from the circus and brought here to the NC Zoo where they are gradually gaining weight and of course now have a much more comfortable home where they can move about and swim.
Unfortunately our plans to eat in 'Tuscany' following the zoo visit didn't work out as the restaurant only serves dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday! We did meet the owner who allowed us inside to look around.........small, pretty, homey and definitely on the list when next in town later in the week. Instead we went to 'Capri', not as nice but still Italy, and who can go wrong with anything Italian!
Your pictures are wonderful. Animals are such magnificent creatures, and you captured them perfectly. I have to admit that Willy is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI have not been to the zoo in Asheboro although I have been living here quite some time. I have visited the National Zoo, but it was many years ago.
Sorry that Tuscany didn't work out for you this time. We went to the Macaroni Grill in Durham today for lunch, and we learned they are closing next Wednesday. The locations in Raleigh and Cary will remain open. I hate to think that I won't be able to have the chocolate cake as readily.
You have peaked my interest about SuzAnna's. I hope to visit there sometime soon. I have planned to go each of the last two Saturdays, but haven't made it yet. Thanks for the tip.
Breathtaking photos, Mary!
ReplyDeleteYou 'captured' my two favorites - the elephant and the giraffe - pictures of strength and grace. I feel the same as you about how some of God's creatures are treated. I must let you read "Journey"...what I wrote about elephants. I always wanted a baby elephant when I was a child.
xoxoxo,
Deborah
I enjoyed your zoo photos...the animals must love having all that green grass to walk about on. I've only visited the San Diego and the LA zoos and the elephants' enclosures have only dusty earth. Green grass looks much more pleasant! And I'm so glad the polar bears were rescued from that horrible place and are now happy and healthy in their new habitat.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are great, I especially like the one with the giraffes and zebras together. Lots of stripes and spots!
Hi, love the photos...no idea how I came across your blog...but I'm delighted, I love it, i'll be back for more... à bientôt :)
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful photos of such amazing and precious animals. My husband and I adore Elephants and I started a collection of them for my hubby a few years ago. Your Easter decorations in your previous post are wonderful Mary - what a great collection of rabbits you have. Wishing you a very Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteHi Mary,
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely photos! I hope to vist the NC Zoo someday....I haven't been to a zoo in many years. Hope you have a wonderful Easter!
Hugs,
Penny
Oh Mary those photos are just wonderful, and Willy well that one touched my heart...rats, sorry you weren't able to eat at Tuscany, I was looking forward to hearing about it and photos. Ha...but sounds like you found another great place, and you're right, who can go wrong with Italian!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Rose
Wow you have some great shots of the animals. They are wonderful.
