Candle Glow

Although we often burn candles throughout the year, the candles of Christmas somehow seem more beautiful. Perhaps because other special displays around the room help with illumination, the shadowy dark corners suddenly light up, the room is different, more homey and cozy. Heidi at Celebrate the Seasons shared an easy candle decorating project using things we already have. She asked that we post pics if we came up with a design..............this is what I did last evening while decorating the living room.

I've had these wonderful old world map candles many years but hesitated to burn them - don't you do that, buy lovely candles and then want to hoard them? I wouldn't even light these when the power went out in a major ice storm a few years ago and we were without electricity for well over a week!! This is the first lighting and they really are beautiful. The heavy painted glass plate is the perfect base, and with a few sparkly tree ornaments, some real pine cones and faux pearls, voila, a great hearth display when the fire is not burning.

While by the hearth - my favorite Winter spot - I started on the mantle decorations. I love pears, to eat, to cook with and to use in my decorating. When setting up my Christmas vignettes I usually blend in Holiday items along with what I'm already using - partly because I have a shortage of storage space, but also because I like this look and don't feel rushed to take it all down after the Holidays. Closer to Dec. 25 I will add fresh greens and berries to the mantle.

A little whimsy is always fun - these stocking holders come out of storage each year and always make me smile. I'm still working on my new stockings for this year - they're hanging but later today I plan to decorate them so will show a close up another time.

Well I'm starting to get the Christmas spirit now. Will have photos from the dining room next time - my favorite place to decorate.

Have a fabulous weekend.............stay safe if traveling, have fun if cutting down or picking out the Christmas tree, enjoy being with loved ones whether family or friends.............and decorate because Christmas will soon be here.

  1. Boy, you have the most cozy inviting house. It just makes you want to drop in for tea. You have some very beautiful things, and you are so right, the candles are way too pretty to burn.

  2. Well, what can I say! First, I so happy that you tried the candle project. I just adore yours! The candles are beautiful but don't you find after you have saved them for a couple of years, you do go ahead and burn them? I have only saved a rose shaped candle all these years as it was a gift from Jos. I love the items you placed together on your charger. They work perfectly and look so wonderful sitting on your hearth!

Your room looks so warm and inviting. What a wonderful place to sit and relax! How fortunate to have the lovely built in bookshelves on both side of the fireplace to house your amazing soup tureens.

I too light candles year round. It is the one easiest way to create a nice atmosphere in any room of the house.

Have a wonderful weekend dear Mary!

  4. What a truly kind and generous family you are - will you gals adopt me, please? I do appreciate your comments so much, just as I enjoy visiting your lovely homes.

Heidi - I had the custom built-ins constructed a few years ago - they cost a small fortune because they are solid wood and beautifully made. They matched the color of our already stained crown moldings/chair rail/mantle etc. so well - nobody realizes they aren't original to the room. Because the house is small I needed display/storage shelves and cabinets to hide the TV and stereo system - and of course a place for those big items such as the tureens. At one point in time I begged Bob to allow me to paint all the woodwork white (before the shelves were added) but he said no way. Like most men, he saw the dollar signs!! We have so many 6-panel real wood doors - and now I'm so glad I didn't have it done because stained wood does suit 'the cottage' style so much better.

Nancy come for tea any day - I'd love that. Bring Kristen with you - and Mandie - we'll have fun. Heidi - you'd better get over here soon so you can stop by too! Hugs to you all.

  11. I love candles. I will have to get out and see what I can find. I am the Scrooge and the Grinch all rolled into one when it comes to decorating for Christmas. It's a long story-but I will try and do a tree this year and do a little candle montage.
