Mountain Discoveries

The 'Screendoor' - vintage and antique furnishings for the home and garden - in Asheville has now become a favorite stop when in Western North Carolina.

One area held an unusual display of original items handcrafted out of assorted metals.
This star cut from old galvanized tin roofing caught my eye - I love the shading of colors, rust silver, blue grey. Hanging on the arbor gate it awaits a garland of white lights for the Holidays.

Other treasures I found to bring home.
The window frame with beautiful rusted white roses.

A stunning handmade Journal incorporating items from Nature - a packet of pretty fairy bookplates.

A set of 'Perfect Penmanship' cursive writing guides in the original box with instructions - mailed to Mrs. Foster in Hampton, Virginia in March 1963 - postage 10 cents! This will be fun for art projects. Lastly, this Italian ice bucket, hammered silverplate with bunches of golden cherries for handles. It shows some wear, nice, but has been polished - if anyone knows how to speed up the tarnish process, please let me know. I want the outside dulled to the interior color if possible. This will be used for flowers, perhaps hold decorative balls, as well as cooling the Holiday champagne!
On the way out of Screendoor I spied this basket of exceptionally beautiful gourds - bought just one to take home and add to the porch display.
There's that word again SIMPLIFY - I'm trying but it's awfully hard.

Just spent a long day - 6-1/2 hours - on the Grand Jury. Only one more session to go and my six months term will be up. Will catch up with everyone later this week and hopefully get some Christmas decorating done.

  2. Wow, you found some treasures. I bet you had a lot of fun browsing through that shop.
Good luck on your decorating. I haven't started yet, and just told my sister I would come help her wrap her gifts. Oh well, it will get done.

  3. What a great time of year to be in Asheville, I bet the trees are so pretty! Like a fresh snowfall, I think it feels so romantic when the leaves first start to fall. Asheville is one of my favorite B&B towns and the shopping is great! xo, suzy

  4. Mary,

I am thinking that I would love that shop. What is it about the holidays that makes me want to find new shops...not for gifts, but for myself. How very rotten of me...well I am good most of the time, LOL>

  6. What pretty finds from this wonderful sounding shop. I can't wait to see some of them being used in your upcoming posts. Good to hear that you will be done with jury duty so you can play house and do some of your decorating. I just decorated my entrance hall chest of drawers this morning but it is still missing something. I have to look around the house for just the right last finishing touch.

My decorating is on hold for a couple of hours today as I finish sewing a reproduction hussif that I need as a sample for my quilt group tomorrow. Boy, did I wait until the last minute. Silly as I postponed the evening until the end of the month. I am making the pattern as I go along and need to really be in the right creative energy to do it. I hope to finish it up soon and get the photos and pattern into my newsletter so I can get back to thinking Christmas.

I loved hearing you lit a fire last night and will be sharing photos soon. I am looking forward to them. By the way, I don't think I relish falling on either real or fake ice. ;)

  10. Wonderful treasures! I especially love the front gate. As for the silver, you could try an oxidising agent--they have them at some craft stores like Michael's--there's some to make iron rust, copper turn green, etc. They're sold to go with the metallic paint, but they'll work on the real thing too.

  12. Hi Mary! We're allowing a little time for our last day in Asheville. This shop sounds wonderful! Is it anywhere near the Doubletree near Biltmore? We've decided to explore a bit, before we start back to Missouri.

    Thanks!
