A late Autumn evening. One major holiday over, another quickly approaching. Driving the highway toward home as the sun goes down. Clouds turn orange and pink behind the leafless trees. I love to see a deciduous tree's 'bones' when the leaves have been whisked away. Thoughts cross my mind.......will there be gentle snow or diamond hard ice coating these branches come Winter? Will the squirrels' nests remain safe as the North wind blows?
The road is straight, the traffic light, the sunset gentle........home creeps closer as miles fall behind us. I knit a few rows, read a few pages until the light dims. We chat about the last couple of days. The bright lights of the great city where we first met - visiting family and friends even older than us, wondering how many Thanksgivings remain for each one of us. It was lovely sharing stories of the days long ago.
Traveling I-95 South toward North Carolina.
The journey home was the destination.
Your post today was a combination of hope and remembrance with both pictures and words. A contended couple who enjoy life. That is a gift for me to share hearing about. Thanks for that.

ReplyDeleteLove from the Netherlands and have a great weekend Rini
That was the sweetest post ever, Mary. Ryan and I always chat in car about the past, the present and the future... wondering how things will be, wondering where we'll be... one thing we both know, is that we are so thankful for our family and friends because they helped us become better people. I'm so thankful for you! Love, Vanessa
ReplyDeleteMary, these photos are lovely. Do you want me to add you to the list today?
ReplyDeleteLovely post. I felt as if I were in the car with both of you. Lovely thoughts and reflections. Time passes...

ReplyDeleteyou have fun pulling out those christmas decs - I've been spray painting anything that I find at the beach and in the bush...WHITE, hee hee
I've always thought it must be a lot of work with two big holidays so close together like that, tho I always always have wanted to be taken under the wing of an American and invited to Thanksgiving...still working on that one, have an American friend here, tho he's the male of the party and the wife is Aussie so they don't really celebrate it!

What a lovely post. You brought me right back to so many twilight drives home after celebrations with my parents - how many houses did we design during those drives?........how many holidays did we plan, and children did we imagine?
ReplyDeleteThinking of the squirrels' nests seems so English somehow--you know, Beatrix Potter like.
ReplyDeleteWell, glad you made it home safe and now onto the nect event--my Tea. I can't wait to try that incredible trifle and plan to give it a good shout out, come Tea time.
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your lovely post, and what you said is true for any of us. Each day is so precious, and we don't know how many days we have ahead. I loved looking at your pictures from your trip and the ~pink~ pictures you shared. Um, makes me want to shop!! I hope you are having good days and feeling very well.
Lynn
