Last month I told you about my dining room redecoration plan here.
I'm amazed that it's been almost eight years since I painted the dining room. After some quick changes from gold to red and then back to linen white - I've lived happily with this until now. The change is imminent - we're turning grey! French Grey of course. Subtle French Country grey, not too dark, not too blue. The French seem to have a knack for mixing and blending the most beautiful greys for those historic village houses and magnificent chateaux.
The wallpaper border will come down. Curtain pole may stay this color - grey blends well with cream, ivory and gold touches, all neutrals.
Have you ever had to choose grey paint? You enter the paint store. You stand ready for action at the display.....to make the perfect choice.....to pick your French Grey. Hesitation creeps in, you breathe heavily as you pick one little card with several greys in a line. You stick it back in the display, too blue? You pull out another, much too dark. This one looks good until you hold it next to white....this grey turns beige. Do you know that paint chips slowly evolve from stark white through what seems like another thousand shades of white before you hit the greys or grays. Then you are faced with warm greys and cool greys. Blue greys and green greys.
You need to have little sample pots and try them all out, it's the only way. hope you find the perfect colour.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that grey is the last fashion in colors. What's this about with you and Corey????

Good luck on the greys. I looked at some and
ReplyDeletequickly changed my mind. I tried to email you yesterday but don't know if you got it.

I am loving living this change through you! Can't wait to see it all transform. I have been following French and Swedish blogs for quite a while and I am in love with the greys, whites, creams...sooo calming.
ReplyDeleteElizabethd en France - I can assure you I've bought enough small sample pots and quarts to mix together and paint the Brooklyn Bridge - if they'd like French Grey, ha! ha!
ReplyDeleteGracie in Italy - yes, I spent a day with Corey in Aix-en-Provence in Oct. Wow! what fun! She took me 'treasure hunting' at a brocante, and we did the Aix market for several hours where she helped me find some great items to bring home which were small enough for my suitcase! Sadly the French armoires and gorgeous 18th doors had to be left for some lucky French gal! She also took me to see some beautiful historic buildings and a magnificent church which I might have missed on my own. Corey also referred me to La Madone, the beautiful place we stayed at during our visit to Provence...........and that's where I just knew I needed to pick French Grey for my upcoming redecorating projects!!! Corey is a lot of fun and the nicest person - I'm sure you know that if you follow her wonderful blog.
Mary.
.... and I thought choosing the perfect shade of blue was difficult !!!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with your painting. Can't wait to see the room when you have finished.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final product. I know it will be fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI am that way with all colors. I will look and look and look for days until I come across the right one!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what I know will be a gorgeous room!
ReplyDeleteLove the grey - Looks so pretty with white..nice choice!
ReplyDeleteMary....
ReplyDeleteWhat a super surprise to get the wonderful herb book you sent! I've already enjoyed browsing through and will definitely be taking a closer look at some of the projects to complete. Herb books are such a favorite of mine and with all the snow I know I will have some time to read.
I also can't wait to go to France and get inspired to change my tired house too. Yours is looking so beauteous. Hubby has already been prepared that packages may appear from the Paris flea markets as some items for the house may be too big to pack in a suitcase.
Thanks Again for the book! ;) Mandy
You should visit http://sea-angels.blogspot.com/. She always has the most delicious grey colour palette!
ReplyDeleteYou might try the tape-on-the-wall method. Tape up the color chips you like and watch them through several days see what they look like in natural and artificial light. Over time, I've found that usually works well, lets me narrow choices down to just two or three. Then I buy the little sample jars of paint.
