The perfection of imperfection

I found this sweet, somewhat chipped, wood framed picture at SuzAnna's Antiques last week. I almost missed it as it was hanging high on the wall of the little office. I immediately knew it would find a home with me as the colors were just right, and I thought it 'perfectly imperfect' to hang in the corner of the dining room. The flowers, casually arranged in my favorite way, have to be from an English garden - delphiniums, perfumed stocks, daisies, hydrangeas - the blooms and fragrances I love so much. This still life, although just a print, seems at home with my own dried hydrangeas.

I'm usually overcome by mixed feelings when I see something old and loved at one time by someone else. Isn't it a little bit sad that they've let it go for some reason you will never know? But the good feeling of bringing it home, after spending just a few dollars ~ this lovely was $12 ~ placing it in the perfect spot, knowing it's admired once again, makes one's heart sing.

  1. Good morning Mary, I love your wonderful find at
Suzanna's. You have a great eye for that which is just perfect. The print has the perfect flowers and colors to add to you lovely new/old look of your dining room. The price is not even the point but it was a great price. (Smiling with lucky you.)

I left a comment on your previous post too.

    Love you...Jeanne

  2. The picture is gorgeous! I would have snatched that one up myself-and for only $12! What a great find! I collect antique photos and often feel sad that the there was no family to keep the photos and tell the person's story. So I 'adopt' them and they become instant relatives:)

  5. Oh Mary:
Heidi always finds it so sad that people give up family pictures and you find them in antique stores. You have to wonder why no one wanted them anymore.
You picture is really pretty. It does look like and English garden for sure.
    Have a good day.
    Love Nancy

  6. Mary, that's exactly how I feel. What's behind those beautiful things we see at the antique shop? I guess if we find something that really catches our eyes that's beause they're meant to be ours and it sure brings a whole new feeling to where it's place it. Much love! Vanessa

  8. Lovely old print, and frame. Nice find! I think it is especially poignant when we find handmade items in thrift shops or yard sales. I always come home with them!

  11. I often feel like that too, Mary. Some things just seem too precious and I wonder why the original owner felt the need to let it go. On the other hand, maybe the article was meant to come to someone who would treasure it! Whatever the reason, it's a perfect fit for your home.

    xo,
    Lynda
