"God gave us our memories so that we might have roses in December."
...................J.M. Barrie, Scottish Author & Dramatist.
Remember Summer by the roses. Their blooms are precious. Their days aren't really numbered because they can continue to live, yes, even until December, once dried. Their colors change, sometimes for the better. Their texture becomes even more interesting, taking on the subtle crispness of vintage crepe paper.

I sometimes buy a bunch of pretty long stemmed roses from the florist ~ they have interesting colors when fresh but I know they will be even more beautiful once dried. After enjoying them in water in the house for a week or so, I tie them together and hang them upside down from the iron chandelier in the potting shed to dry. This can take several weeks depending on the weather and the temperature in the shed. I know there are fancy ways to preserve flowers, however this is my simple way and it works.
The roses of Summer can share their beauty year round. These retained their pinkness and are perfect standing on a tray decoupaged with more pink roses. This is my second post in a week on dried roses ~ guess you can now tell I love them!
Our fun Pink Saturday hostess Beverly at How Sweet the Sound grows beautiful roses in her own garden. If you stop by today she will definitely have a growing list of participants for this always fun day.
Sometimes I think roses are even prettier once they have dried out. Like white roses. They look like thin crepe paper.

Mary,
ReplyDeleteLike Sher, I also can't decide which is best -- fresh or dried. Roses are so lovely either way.
I came by a few days ago and had so many things I wanted to comment to you -- the lovely flowers, the figs, but I got swept quickly away with all that was going on here.
I need to get myself in gear and remember the Friday Family Foto and Pink Saturday events to take part in! By the way, I love your family photograph of the four sisters. Oh, to see those gowns and the room you describe. It would be amazing!!
Lynn
PS -- It has rained barrels and barrels here, but fortunately no damage that I can see so far this morning.
Happy Pink Saturday.
ReplyDeleteI love dried roses. Especially the little mini roses. So pretty in a crystal dish!

I love the dried roses in front of the painting... it looks very soft & romantic. xoxo, Joanna
ReplyDeleteThose roses look so pretty! They're beautiful when fresh but they definitely look prettier when dried. I love the "fall" colors they turn into. Btw that really was a monkey toy I had. It probably had a name but I don't remember, I'll ask my parents about it cause I'm sure they do. Wishing you a nice weekend! Love, Vanessa
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dried roses...I was just looking at some of my "fresh" roses I have had a week now...I think it is time to take them out to the garage and hang upside down. They are yellow and red. I wonder how they will look dried.

What a lovely post. I like to dry flowers, too. I clip all summer and dry them in the phone book. These roses are extra special. They remind me of ironed vintage fabric. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteLovely roses! I want to dry some now myself. Thanks for inspiring me.
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday, Mary. I dry my roses by the same method.
ReplyDeleteWe survived Hanna, and the sun is blessing us now. Our neighbor has a downed tree in her backyard. It is on her fence, but the fence didn't break.
Of course, you know I love roses. Thank you for the compliment on our rose garden. Next spring when we have our first bloom maybe you can come take some for your home.
