Best When Fresh

Early morning in the garden, the humidity wraps one in a damp blanket on opening the door and stepping out into a green world. Up early, I drifted past the large flower pots along the front path, an early rising bee was busy at the Lantana.

In the side garden, and raised bed, the vegetables are struggling, not unusual here in the hot and humid Summer weather of the Southeast. I picked a fistful of perfect haricots verts dangling from the bamboo tepees...............spied some delicate yellow squash needing a few more days of sunshine before harvesting..............firm green tomatoes are expanding their waistlines as they call out for more water..............and, best of all right now, the heat loving herbs are growing rapidly both in pots and beds.

My first picked bunch of Napolitano Mammoth-Leafed Basil.

"Napolitano has absolutely huge, light green, crinkled, savoyed leaves. Richly flavored, these mammoth leaves are perfect for serious pesto makers - height 24 inches".

That's me, a "serious" pesto maker! Off to stock up on Extra Virgin Olive Oil, pine nuts and walnuts.

  1. I think blogger is having troubles today. I cannot post more than one photo so I have to put off my post today and one of your photos is not showing up. I love basil in any way shape or form. I think it adds to just about any meal you put it with. I think that basil and parsley are my most used herbs.

  2. We had lantanas growing all over our garden when I grew up but they were declared a Pernicious Weed in South Africa a number of years ago and are completely outlawed!

I love homemade pesto. My late hubby was a great pesto maker. He also made delicious hummus.

I shall think about you all the time I am overseas in those magical places. I have booked a tour to the Louvre (never been there on the 2 previous visits to Paris) and to the Uffizi in Florence (have been to the Pitti Palace but not the Uffizi). In that way I can escape the long queuves in the sun.
Also want to see if I can catch a Lazzi bus to Arezzo as I have seen Siena and Lucca before (would love to do everything but time...). I am actually staying in Prato where the conference is at the campus of Monash University. But Florence is just a 15 minute train ride away and the summer days are long! So I can safely do my academic duty and some sightseeing too.

  3. We love pesto at our house. I can't seem to buy enough pine nuts. I love them toasted to add to pasta dishes, too.

  9. Hi Mary! Basil are one of my favorite seasonings. I love it as a pizza topping with tomato and fresh ricotta cheese. Also with shrimp and pasta. hugs and kisses, Vanessa

Ymmmm... pesto... just the best summer food.
Thanks for stopping by. I forgot to comment I am jealous of your upcoming trip.. well not really jealous...but Provence is the best place to visit.
    Your brother lives there, right?
Are you ever tempted to move there?
I guess not as your family and gdaughter are in NC, but oh such a wonderful place to go visit family or friends.
How long will you be there?
And glad your daughter was ok on the hit and run accident.

  11. It must be so sweet to have your very own vegetable garden. Too much shade for us! And, I love that lantana photo!

  12. I am really interested in this mammoth basil. I can't seem to grow enough of the traditional kind to meet our needs for basil. I need to comment about all your urns, as well. They are gorgeous and I love them. I love getting ideas for ways to use mine from your photos.

    Blessings,
    Christi
