Summertime, and the living is NOT easy

Oops, hang on, just have to wipe my brow and push the a/c down a couple more notches.............that's much better.
I always drink my coffee hot and black............except on days when the temperature hits triple digits..........then it's long, tall iced coffee, with a touch of heavy cream so it coats and sticks on the ice cubes for a minute before swirling into the dark java below. Today the heat index was 107 degrees, tomorrow will be worse, perhaps 111 degrees. I'm fortunate I don't have to leave the house, I can stay here in air conditioned comfort, fanning my lounging self on the love seat, sipping more iced coffee, frosty lemonade, chilled water - looking at cool October back issues of magazines, humming "September Song", dreaming of pumpkins, falling leaves, my much loved shearling vests, a chill in the evening air, the bracing early mornings with dew on the grass. Roll on Fall say I - my favorite time of year.
Today, after two steamy hours of hand watering to keep the garden going, I looked around the house for cool things to put me in a frigid mood.

My pretty beaded bowl.

The quaint birdhouse with a crystal perch - sorry birds, you'll have to make a housecall to get into this one.

Crystals dangling from the front porch chandelier.

A shimmering mica star on the cool blue bedroom wall.

My sterling necklaces and bracelets - too hot to wear but cool looking just hanging around.

The gorgeous Italian bath crystals in the frosted bottles ~ though I must say a cold shower is better in this heat.

Mid-afternoon snack - after ice, lemons are the coolest - and a mix of these two is even better.

I rarely drink beer - just like the first cold sip - but this English beer mug straight from the freezer looks, and feels, so cold.

And this evening..............after a bowl of chilled cucumber Gazpacho, what could be more refreshing than a glass of this fabulous Italian LIMONCELLO liqueur, served over ice in Edinburgh crystal after 15 minutes in the freezer. Mamma mia, Italians certainly know to squeeze their lemons!

Hope you are staying cool. Just think, in a couple of months and we can gripe about the cold. Of course we should be grateful for every day, no matter what the weather. It's certainly a subject we always seem to have plenty to say about.

  1. Oh Mary...such lovely refreshing photos! I had to go out today and it was actually kind of hard to breathe. Perhaps I can stay in tomorrow.

I don't believe we know one another Mary, but I do live in Raleigh...in Foxcroft.

Thank you for visiting my place. Please come back again!

  4. Hi Mary...The Limoncello looks good. I've never tried it, but certainly interested in trying it now!
We keep mugs in the freezer, too. Just for beer! I'm like you, just a little bit of beer...but J loves his beer!
I enjoyed all your photos. Fall is my favorite time of year. Hoping it cools off soon. We're meeting friends in Branson, toward the end of next month.

Our temps are similar to yours at the moment.

Did you get the photo editing e-mail, I sent?

  8. Wow, that is hot! I once made some homemade lemoncello. It tasted just like the store bought but I decided with the labor involved and the time waiting for it to get drinkable, to just buy it from now on.

  13. Oh, I love iced coffee with something creamy (I'm even ok with 1% milk), and how I miss Luigi's Lemon Italian Ice (the cherry was pretty good, too). I'll have to look around for that treat again. THANK YOU for the reminder on those!

  15. Mary, Autumn is my favorite time of year too! I love October, the changing leaves, pumpkins, those wonderful fall colors, cool air, yummy sweaters. I love Halloween and all that great Autumn decorating (and antiquing). The antiquing is always so good at that time of year. I really love all your "cool" inspiration. The Limoncello looks wonderful. Love your necklaces - so pretty, and all the great decorative items (and your chandelier)!

  16. Hello! Tracy from South Carolina (US) here and I'm just loving your site. I ventured here through Victoria May Plums' Village Diary and your site will DEFINATELY be on my favorites list! What a lovely lovely place to visit for one such as I. I love England. NEVER been there, but I spend lots of time reading or watching travel dvd's/books and the History channel. One day, maybe...!
    God bless!
