If you shop retailers such as TJMaxx, Marshall's and HomeGoods, you know what to expect. Those of us who have trawled these aisles for years, have found the good, bad and often the really ugly, be it clothing or household items. Those stores have often been lifesavers though and we have found great bargains.......from leather bags and trendy jackets, to fabulous dishes and good olive oil.

While my DH shopped for socks a few days back at a local TJMaxx, I checked the book section which, as you may have noticed, has now become smaller and is limited to mostly cookbooks. I almost yelled aloud when, between some brightly colored notepads and boxes of Thank You cards, I found this 'book', so not TJMaxx! Imagine my surprise, an old yellowed sheaf of pages, wrinkled and stained edges, tied with jute string, the way I like my books. Oh how I wished there were more hidden. The cashier, an elderly French speaking Lebanese lady, wanted to steal it from me.........she swooned as I did, and wanted to know how I decorated my home. She planned to look for more books like this but I know she won't tell me if she finds any........you can bet they'll be going home with her.

I don't shop these retail shops as much these days. I think treasure hunting in antiques malls, flea markets and thrift shops have become much more exciting. I was however thrilled to find this book........one never knows what's hidden on a shelf so always seek the unexpected.

Daffodils from Trader Joe's.
I shop those shops less and less going mainly to consignments, flea markets, and goodwill. Not that I don't try to find a bargain at TJ Maxx since I can come out of there with a spring in my step! I love looking for the unusuals. That book was a great find! It would have been something, I too, would have snapped up in a heartbeat!!! Love your new banner header Mary, I need to get busy and put one up for March. The one I have in mind for April is soooo cute.
ReplyDeleteI hope all is going well with all of you. We have been so busy getting things ready for spring with these warm days.
Take Care!!!!

Love your find!! That is also why I love Home Goods and TJ Maxx! You just never know what treasures you will unearth!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings~
TJ Maxx has never let me down. What a spectacular find!
ReplyDeleteThat was an unexpected treasure! Now, I want to run to my local TJ MAXX and see if there is anything like that at mine!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Penny
ps the silver pitcher and daffodils are pretty.
Wow - was it just sitting on the shelf like that? Did you "do" anything special with it? I can't imagine this being an item for sale ...but how oh how I would LOVE to make that discovery! Good for YOU :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing find. I would never have thought to even look there. Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable! I cannot imagine finding this treasure at TJ MAXX! You must have flown over to the socks aisle to show Bob!
ReplyDeleteHope you are both doing well. Your trip of a lifetime ... when is it?

I shop TJ etc. all the time and cannot believe that treasure was there! I almost had to read it twice to believe it. What a find. I'm grabbing my keys and heading there right now!
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm stunned, too. Very pretty. I can't imagine flipping that beauty over and seeing a bar code on the back!
ReplyDeleteHope your week is going well!

Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog. I am so happy to know of another Edith Holden fan. Isn't her artwork beautiful? How lucky you are to have Country Diary china! I would love for you to post some pictures some time. I did not even know that there was such a thing. You are lucky to have lived in such a beautiful area. I hope you will continue to enjoy spring's unfolding. God Bless! Carla
ReplyDeleteMy heart did a little skip when I opened this page. To see that first photo was like sheer poetry! You do have a lovely touch with all you do, Mary. I think this book was lucky to find you. It was waiting just for YOU!
ReplyDeleteI must tell you! I went to the doctor this morning. After, I had some time before picking up Nick at school on Falls of the Neuse. Went into TJ Maxx and guess what I found! A treasure just like you found! ...and only $3.00. I could barely believe it!!
ReplyDeleteWow, I had given up on TJM for anything I hadn't seen before. Thanks for the heads up. AND I hadn't realize TJ's had their daffodils already. I must go right now and get some. We need some spring in this house. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWe have TKMaxx in the UK and I love to visit there and see what catches my eye - but I've never seen a book like that anywhere. It suits your style very well, congratulations on the find!
ReplyDeleteHey Mary,
ReplyDeleteAs Deborah also found one of those "old" books in the TJ Maxx store on Falls of the Neuse Road location, I think I will swing over after work today and check out the local Parsippany, New Jersey TJ Maxx store just down the road from the office I am visiting this week. I guess I don't have to ask permission in advance to buy it if I should happen to see one there, do I?
You will know how successful I have been in my hunt when you pick me up at the airport tomorrow evening.
Your DH, Bob
Wow, I can't believe you found this treasure in the aisles of TJ Maxx! Now that is a totally unexpected, serendipitous find. Congratulations! Have a good time with your company this week.

What a great find! I love to find things when and where I least expect it! Look at your calendar and let me know what would be a good date in April. I will be out of town the 14-18.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Donna
That is certainly an unexpected thing to find there! It's gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteYou put me in the mood for Spring beautiful post.

TJ Maxx used to be my "Go to" place when I had money. I never go there, or shop anywhere retail any more. I can't believe you found such a treasure there. That is just not the kind of item they usually sell. Wow - how serendipitous!
