I'm in New York City! Arrived ahead of the storm which will be hitting the city this afternoon. Heavy snow, up to 8" predicted so don't know what we're in for. New York City, an amazing place which actually holds no traditional memories of Christmas for me. I first arrived here many years ago on my way to Washington, D.C. All I remember of that cold night, following a long flight across the pond (my first time ever in a plane), was having all my luggage opened and examined by Customs & Immigration because, after all, I was an emigrant!
So, like most of us, my Christmas traditions go back to my childhood. In England we celebrated in a much simpler way in the 1940's and '50's, the years when I was growing up. These images were not taken that far back, but they will give you an idea as to some of the things that still mean 'tradition' to me.
Snuggling by a roaring fire and reading this, the most wonderful story ever of British Christmas traditions. Best is the audio version actually read by the author, Dylan Thomas.
Definitely a must, Christmas china to serve all those holiday foods - this set was at SuzAnna's Antiques a couple of years ago. Love the simple design of a holly sprig - now that's tradition.
Of course there's plenty more that is traditional in my home but the city calls, time to pull on boots, bundle up warmly as it's freezing here, leave you and head out to see the Big Apple sights before they're blanketed in snow.
Be sure to visit Beverly at How Sweet The Sound where all the Pink Saturday participants are sharing their holiday traditions.
So, not Vermont, which was my guess, but NYC.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful time, take lots of pix to share, and tell us all about it on your return.
It snowed in Normandy last night too, quelle surprise!

Oh Mary!! That is such a beautiful Christmas tradition. I once had my luggage opened and looked through too, it's funny to remember now... I'm so glad I got to share the Christmas Crackers with you and Bob, it certianly was a lot of luck to have you too with me! We're taking the two left ones to crack with my family, I guess we'll have to introduce a new tradition to the brazilian side of our family (smaile).Love the idea of the actual stocking, so charming. We have never had stocking as part of Brazilian traditions but I remember putting my fancy kid shoes on a window hoping that Santa would see my little shoe and know that in that house there wass a little one waiting for her gift. These memorie definitely bring tears to my eyes... love the innocence that's behind it. Enjoy NYC!!! Love to you all! Vanessa
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday!

No snow here in Toronto yet...

Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteI hoped you had arrived before the snow had a chance to shut things down! It should be gorgeous to see the city in its snowy white dressing. Have a marvelous time & stay warm.
Chris
And you thought Chicago was cold...
ReplyDeleteLove your black & white pictures, they make the sweet traditions look ages old and I love all of them. And the Christmas China is beautiful!
Happy holidays, Mary!

Oh, oh, oh..I hope the three of you have a lovely time in the snowy city. It should really be fun and oh so festive. Make sure you get to Bryant Park to the little shopping village and skating rink and across the street to Le Pain Quotidien. That is to remind you of your many trips to France..aah, warm bowls of cafe au lait or hot chocolate ( for Jasmin) after a snowy walk about the city.
ReplyDeleteWe are expecting 12"-15" of snow, but hopefully it won't have any effect on my son's arrival Tuesday night from the PNW. He leaves on Sunday to fly to Raleigh to spend a couple of days with his Dad. I think he will be happy to escape the ice and snow of New England, the rain and gloom of the PNW for the sunny ( hopefully) Southern skies.
Happy Holidays, dear friend.
Janet
Dear Mary (& family)...
ReplyDeleteThe first thing I thought about this morning when I opened my computer and realized that blizzard warnings were posted for the Atlantic Seaboard was YOU! Glad you made it there ... and hope you are able to have a safe and timely return.
Yes, the memories of Christmas's past are what we cherish most. Enjoy your strolling in what will be an NYC winter wonderland of snow.

Lovely traditions! I think simple is probably best. Enjoy your visit to NYC! I'd love to read that book - I just got it as an e-book. I didn't know much about it, but now that you've mentioned it, I will make a point to read it. Have a wonderful Pink Saturday and a very Merry Christmas.

Hi Mary
ReplyDeleteJust watching the weather on TV and I see you're really getting a snowstorm in NYC!
We always had Christmas crackers for Christmas in Canada too.
Enjoy your time in New York.
Hugs, Rhondi
Have a terrific time in the Big Apple. I've spent a winter in NYC and know how beautiful the city becomes blanketed in snow. Of course once things start to thaw and the city begins to move again it isn't such a pretty sight. LOL Enjoy the magic while it lasts.
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays ! ~ Sarah
I believe in hanging official socks or stockings! Very nice post. Thank you for your visit, and have a Merry Merry Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you beat the storm to NYC and hope it doesn't keep you from enjoying the city. It sounds like a really big one. Merry Christmas!
