Joys of Gardening - Tech. Problem

Rain, rain, beautiful rain...................at long last we've been getting quite a lot around here, heavy soakings of a couple of inches the past couple of days. This now means mow, rake, trim, plant, all those garden chores that just required water from the heavens in order to grow something..................and then it grows some more!

This bed with periwinkle and ivy is my first battleground as my birdbath is about to be hidden, those two vines definitely grow several inches a day! The guy at the garden center warned me many years ago, he used that dreaded word 'invasive', but of course I was stubborn and said I'd keep them in check - famous last words.
(Click on pic below to see the male Towhee visiting the angel).

Below are the implements of torture for an aging gardener such as me - rakes! Last week I injured my right shoulder rotator cuff overdoing it with these, ouch!

So, instead of working in the garden daily as is necessary this time of year, I enjoyed the last of the azalea blooms and bluebells.......................

...............and loved gazing at these new Iris I planted which, for some reason, were also loved by the squirrels who have bitten off several buds.....................pesky devils!

Stay limber all you gardeners - remember to warm up your muscles prior to digging and raking. Wouldn't you know it, adding insult to injury, here in the Southeast the dreaded mosquitoes are appearing already and at the weekend I got my first bites of the season. I'll be stocking up on cans of OFF and Benadryl sprays any day now.....................and I'll be heading for my screened gazebo every chance I get.

Hope you had a great weekend - many thanks for all the generous comments left this past week, they mean a lot to me.

A note about the technical problem I'm experiencing with Blogger - I'd really appreciate any help you might be able to give me if you have had this same problem. I cannot load anymore photos to my blog even though I purchased 10GB of extra storage ($20) in March when told I was running low - although I found this hard to believe as one is supposed to be able to upload about 4,000 images free! You may know that your images are stored by PICASA for use on your GOOGLE Blogger account. Apparently my purchased storage has never been recognized at PICASA and now they refuse to allow anymore pics on my blog - how frustrating is this!!!!!!!

I'm trying to work this out with GOOGLE but haven't been able to get far yet - will let you know the outcome - meanwhile I may not be able to post pics. Has anyone out there had this problem - please let me know, thanks so much.

  1. Your garden is magnificent and I love your gazebo. As for your tech problems... I can't think of what you might do. But I'll be back if I come up with anything.

  3. Lovely photos, as always. And hope to see more! Keep us posted on your tech problem...yikes. You have been blogging years longer than I have. I have wondered how much material can be stored with google. Maybe you'll be able to give us some good advice for down the road. What is the alternative? To delete old posts?

  4. The gardener is nuts to use the word invasive. I say lush and green. That can't be bad. :) I think anything that gives you a green cover cannot be bad as it will be the ground covered from the dry sun too. I wish my ground cover plants were that full up at the cottage.

I too wish you could come through my garden gate for tea and a very nice long chat. Yes, I remember that sign starting out our friendship and was thinking about that as I put it back out by the front door.

Now Bob! I really liked you but not if you are telling our Mary to stop blogging!!! It must just be the heat of the afternoon sun that got to you for a moment to say something like this. :) Needles to say, there were shreaks of shock and horror in this house as I read it to my mother.

I am missing my daily visits to your front porch Mary. I just am too busy getting some last minute gifts together for my online friends joining us next week. Time if flying by!

I hope you have a wonderful week. We are leaving for Cranberry Cottage soon as Wednesday and Thursday are Dutch holidays and Jos has the week off after today.

    Hugs ~

  5. Mary, I hope your shoulder is better soon, and that you have no any long-lasting damage. Your home, as always, looks like a wonderful haven.

I'm no help to you with Blogger. I use TypePad. I have heard of someone having the problem you described, but I don't know the outcome. Good luck.

  7. I love your ground cover. I have ivy and pachysandra mixed together and it is too late to separate them without some major work so I say let them be happy together. Sorry about your shoulder, mine is Tennis Elbow type tendonitis in my right elbow. Ouch!

Rain here for two days and lots more in the 10 day forecast. Everything is just taking off and growing like crazy.

  9. Ivy and periwinkle - that's what we have! ...and plenty of it, I must say. We cannot control ours - it is way out of hand and it's where the s n a k e s abide! We just did away with one this past Sunday.

I'm having a giveaway if you would care to enter!

    Love and hugs,

  11. What a neat blog you have. I love the photos and everything is so beautiful. As I sit here in dry hot dusty Arizona. And I emphasize the 'hot'.

I found your blog through.....man..can't remember where I've been today. Anyway, glad I did.

  12. Not sure about blogger problem w/ photos. I load all my photos directly from my desktop.

Love the ground cover and periwinkle (one of my favourites) but, wow, you have it lush there! Here's it's far too dry...

  13. Wow. I agree with Lucy..the photos are great. I'll keep checking back for updates. It's almost embarrassing to look at my own. I do have an idea for you on mosquitoes...I've had good success so far with the skeeter defeater

  14. We had hardly any mosquitoes last year, it was so dry. But I would tolerate them if it meant rain. How I wish we could have some of yours. They promise, and they promise and they promise, but never deliver (meterologists, I mean).

Boy, do I know the meaning of the word invasive. I planted some lavatera a few years back and now I hate them. We have a wildflower here that the State of ND considers a noxious weed but I love it: ladybells (adenophora). They are so pretty and it is not hard to pull them out by the roots.

  16. If you have ever been to So. California, you will know that it is hard to imagine vistas like this in the backdrop of a garden. I would have to move a long ways from here to experience that. We have gorgeous gardens, but my, my, my, what a backdrop you have for your lovely plants!

I am so behind on my blog visits that I am starting at the bottom and working up. I do hope that you resolved your Picasa problem.

    Hugs, KJ
