Green and Gorgeous

Yesterday, on my way to the garden center of a 'big box' store to hunt down Boston ferns for the front porch, I stopped to buy a card at a chain drug store in my neighborhood.
At the entrance were these beautiful ferns...........FOR SALE!
I was jumping for joy at such perfection ~ even dh agreed they were gorgeous.
The store manager told me they arrived Thursday and were selling like wild fire. I'm not surprised because they are huge, healthy, and grown right here at a local nursery which of course is a good thing. They were $15 ea., which is $5 more than the BB store, however there's no comparison..............when I checked there later I found them smaller, droopy, many fronds broken, with a pale greyish green look as if crying out for fertilizer.........and a good long, slow drink!

Now I'm anxious to clean up the front porch. With the wrens gone, and hopefully the purple finches staying out of these lovely ferns (they are such messy birds), as soon as the pollen has eased up I can get to work. We had so much oak pollen falling yesterday it was hard to breathe outside. Hopefully showers during the night have dampened it down and cleared the air somewhat.

Have to show you my trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) which burst into bloom a couple of days ago on the arbor leading to the back garden. The orange flowers are profuse this year and will surely attract the hummingbirds............and bees, but that's good because we need more bees for pollination.

In the Southeastern U.S., trumpet vine is sometimes considered a weed and is quite invasive if not pruned. Mine was pruned back to the ground a few years ago when the house was painted and this is the best year for blooms since.

The plant to the left of the gate is a climbing rose, John Cabot, a hardy Canadian. Also pruned back and mulched over the Winter, it's now growing rapidly with our warm temperatures this week, and starting to bloom. I keep white mini lights up year round on the fence and arbor as they look pretty and bring a little romance to the night garden. (Click photo to enlarge).

Another view of the front entry and porch. Our little fountain decided to quit bubbling and we have purchased a replacement which we plan to assemble this week ~ hope it's easier this time around ~ I remember it took hours to get all the internal parts together, especially with instructions in a vague interpretation of English!
We enjoy sitting on the porch and listening to the water splashing. The current fountain will be moved somewhere in the garden and used as a birdbath, which is what it's become anyway..........even catch squirrels stopping by for a drink now and then.

This warm, sunny weather is causing everything in the garden to start bursting forth. Each morning as the dawn chorus breaks into song, still in my robe, coffee mug in hand, I tiptoe around the dewy garden to view the beauty of the new day. Those of you who garden know the feeling when you see all those little miracles pushing up through the earth. Perhaps my love affair with Autumn is waning a little ~ have to admit Spring just gets better every year.

Off to grab clogs and tiptoe through the wet grass right now. Hope to have new garden treasures to share with you later.

  1. Oh my, those ferns look so lush and healthy! My dear grandmother loved ferns and they always remind me of her. And she had a lovely trumpet vine, too. Thanks for the trip down memory lane this morning. Always love your posts.

  2. Those ferns are gorgeous and so full! I was at Home Depot yesterday looking for some for my front porch urns and they all were half dead. EVERYBODY was buying plants yesterday. I couldn't find one thing I was looking for and they were out of top soil! Today I'm going to Lowe's and I hope I have better luck. I always LOVE pictures of your gardens! The trumpet vine is just beautiful and already so thick! Have a wonderful Sunday!

  3. What a beautiful home you have made for yourself. It is the epitome of everything I love - cottagey, warm, stylish and elegant. And your pictures are so well taken. I am another from across the pond. I'm relishing the roots I have put down here, while never losing touch with my beginnings.

Your site is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing it! :)

  7. We were so thankful for that gentle rain during the night, too. Hopefully we are nearing the end of the extreme pollen.

I played in the yard yesterday - just enjoying all of the blooms, the green and the beautiful day. I did come inside with shoes coated yellow though.

My irises are opening, and I hope to post some pictures of them tomorrow.

Your ferns are just exquisite, and they are making it extremely difficult for me to resist. For years I put them in our sunroom, but several years ago I switched to ivy. I do have some natural ferns growing along our creek bed and in our woods. I need to purchase my geraniums soon.

My husband's favorite season is Autumn, but mine is definitely spring. I love it - even with the pollen.

  8. Oh Mary, Mary! You have a wonderfully romantic yard! It's not 'wild' as ours is! I dearly love your arbor gate.

Our deck was just sealed Friday. Perhaps now I can go for some plants to pot. I LOVE those ferns! Did they come with the beautiful black hangers? You got a deal! I must ask - where did you find them?

Leah and her family just left from here an hour ago. They've been here since Friday. It was an unexpected trip - we didn't know they were coming until Thursday evening. We gave her a surprise family baby shower this morning before they left. She is doing wonderfully well! Thank you for asking! C-section will be June 13, 9 AM.

I'm okay. MRI last week - nothing has changed with the cyst. Neurologist appt. this coming Thursday - for the headaches.

    Hugs to you and Bob!

  11. Mary those ferns are amazing. I enjoyed seeing all your photos.

I really believe we are beginning to have some great weather here in Missouri, at last! Another sure sign....I had to have a good dose of benadryl, yesterday evening!

  12. Your porch and gate and yard are just so pretty and inviting!

I'm feeling slightly ashamed of myself for not taking more care with my own little piece of the country here in Southern California.

  14. Mary, I have so much enjoyed catching up on your blog this evening. I love your little bird collection -- the ones that don't really eat seeds. ~:-D

The pictures of the little wrens leaving the nest are just adorable! Your garden, porch and the ferns are lovely!! I can so relate to the magic of walking through the dewey garden first thing in the mornings. There's nothing like it.

  16. I love ferns but I never see them for sale here except as small indoor plants. I'm sticking with tried and true geraniums myself.

  18. Oh Mary.....I just love the shots of your home and landscape! I am anxiously awaiting more and more.

I started three trumpet vines last year in big pots. This year they will take their permanent place.....somewhere....hmmmm.

I love your Boston ferns. For some odd reason, the best place to buy ferns here is the grocery store! They are always very healthy and generally about 10.99 for just a bit smaller pot than yours. I have no idea where they procure them.

Have a wonderful gardening week! :-) Rosie

  19. Oh how I miss stopping by for a visit Mary! I snuck upstairs so I could say hello. We just finished dinner and everyone is now relaxing in the living room. I will go back to join them in just a moment. We stayed here today and a girlfriend of mine came by to see my mother. We do plan to go over to a village near here tomorrow as my mother wants to go to the shops there. I have not been there since she was last here so I am not even sure what shops are there now. Maybe we will find some fun items.

I love your new ferns! They are really perfect. I, as always, enjoy coming to visit you on your front porch. I only wish it was for real and then I could enjoy a cup of Earl Grey while chatting the afternoon away...

    Hugs ~

  20. Hi Mary
I love seeing pictures of your house and garden. That trumpet vine is fabulous and I love your white gate and fence. Being originally from Canada I know who John Cabot was. Didn't know there was a rose named after him. Your ferns are huge. The finches have started to make a nest in one of mine. They aren't as cute as wrens, but it's still fun to have birds nesting nearby. One year I didn't know they wer there ans I dumped a whole watering can on the poor little mom sitting on her eggs. It didn't deter her though. No matter whether birds, animals or humans, we moms are determined when it comes to raising our young.
Hope you have a great day.
    Hugs Rhondi
