Autumn Greens

Before the shorter days take on Autumnal hues, remember the greens............they are still here in different forms.
Traditional orange pumpkins, golden butternut squash, Indian corn, rusty gourds, rosy hips and berries - all brighten up the Autumn landscape................but I'm almost green with envy for these!

Pull up a chair, sit and ponder awhile.................watch the early morning mist rising up from the Autumn garden, hear the fresh green acorns falling through the russet oak leaves. Can this be the one.....................will it become a mighty oak?

  1. This post is so lovely. Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote a poem in which he says something like "Bless God for dappled things." Anyway, I'm sure I butchered that but am at work so have no time to google it.

We have very few oaks in ND - just a few in the eastern part of the state, so I have to make do with your photo. Very nice compositions, by the way.

  2. Thank you for reminding me about cherishing the greens, too. And I love how you've presented the color in your photos, quite lovely.

Julie Marie's comment is wonderful, too. She's referring to Hopkins' poem "Pied Beauty." The first line is: GLORY be to God for dappled things. I think her mention of this really echoes your gorgeous pictures and thoughtful post.

  6. Lovely photos Mary, and I especially like the ending thought about the acorns falling - "Can this be the one.....will it become a mighty oak?"

  10. Hello, Mary ~ Thank you for your sweet comments. They are always encouraging and uplifting. I have enjoyed viewing your garden pictures this morning. The acorn and pedestal are so, so sweet with your little question about the great oak. Your photos make me long for a backyard of my own. Soon. :) Have a wonderful day.

  11. I love these photos. Are they taken around your garden?

You are so right that we must not forget the greens. Without the green, our wonderful autumn colors just don't seem as colorful.

You asked if I was Dutch or a transplanted American. I am a bit of both. I was born and grew up in the States (Ohio) but I immigrated to Holland to marry my Dutch husband 21 years ago. Now my Dutch friends tell me I am sometimes more Dutch than they are. :-) And yes, I do share that love of Gregorian Chant. I have Ambrosian Chants on as I type this to you.

Any luck with finding a pitch fork to use in the garden?
