Isn't this a delightful old bowl? Creamy white decorated with pale blue-gray dandelions. Even weeds can look beautiful on china! One small crack, a little crazing, just perfect!

If you collect antique or vintage china you may well have an old washbowl and pitcher set. I've never considered collecting these as they are large............don't forget, my home is a small cottage! My largest pieces were the collection of white soup tureens that fit perfectly on my shelves. However, last week when treasure hunting with my Brazilian friend, Vanessa, my heart thumped when I spied this bowl, without a pitcher, in one of those somewhat redundant second hand furniture shops. Among some ugly plaid sofas and blond wood frame futons, there were a few really nice treasures tucked away in china cabinets or sitting on fifties style tables. Old silver, a couple of framed French music sheets, sets of dinnerware and this lovely old wash bowl. Marked $15 but actually 'on sale' for just $12, what a great find!

My bowl fits in well on the dining room table.
One never knows what treasure will show up in an unexpected place. No identifying marks on the base so cannot date it - my guess would be early 1900's as the design is a single color transfer. Any ideas as to age would be welcomed.

What a perfect bowl! I look forward to seeing what you fill it with as time goes on.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day! I am off to do some more painting on my new studio.
Hugs,
Penny
That bowl is lovely! I love bowls..big ones, small ones, they just have to be pretty! And this one shure fits that requirement! Good find :-)
ReplyDeleteLovely bowl, simple country style.
ReplyDeleteIt would have been a crime to leave it behind.

Lovely bowl Mary. I have a similar one in red transferware. Perhaps I should unearth it and put in the dining room table again. Thanks for the reminder...you know how we tend to forget we have things after a bit...could it be middle age?
ReplyDeletea good find. something i would have to definitely picked up had i been there. i so need to get into all my stored boxes and do some hunting for my treasures i have not unpacked since moving into this house. never seems to be a good time to do it. it is a huge ordeal.
ReplyDeletehave a lovely week.
You are on a roll!
ReplyDeleteHello Mary!!
ReplyDeleteI am SO behind on blogging...3 days at the lake and 4 at home really makes it hard to establish a routine. I have read back on your blog and I can see that I have missed so many interesting posts, so I am leaving you the longest comment in the history of blogging!! lol! This is not in much order...
The bowl without the pitcher, lovely. And the china you went back for. I remember how you painted your dining room and cabinet in shades of gray so I know that these pieces are looking absolutely beautiful there. The butter pats are so cute and look wonderful as coasters!! I love small pieces of china like that. I found little tea bag thingies (I know you know what these are called, it escapes me now) to rest your used bag on and my Alan loves to rest his teaspoon on these. And in closing on all of your great china finds, I want to say the story about Royal Doulton and John Doulton was very interesting. I never would have thought to research this. I have a few pieces of children's Royal Doulton that I need to figure out what to do with once I take down their shrine ( a shelf in the den that holds their old teddy bears, photo albums and treasured artwork. I know, I have a hard time letting go!).
I am so excited about your new camera. It's magnificant. I love the pictures that look like old photos. Is that an option on the camera?? Must be. I would think that you could find that option on the myriad of 'photo fixing' websites, but if this is a feature on your camera, fabulous!! I totally freak out over manuals and you are like me, I have to take time away without distraction to read all of that tiny fine print. Your best friend is a jewel to gift you with this terrific camera. Wow!! I just bought myself a new and better (more complex) camera and I forced the memory card in upside down. I could cry. I am hoping a camera shop has a way to remove it without me having to send it in on warranty or whatever it is going to take to repair this that I am SURE is going to take FOREVER. In the meantime, I share Emily's camera, which I believe takes wonderful pictures although it was half the price of my new one (which I have never seen a picture from yet!).
In closing I will admit (shhhhh...), that I have 2 bundles of love letter locked away. It is not that I was some sort of dream girlfriend, I just happened to have a love struck high school guy and a long distance romance with a great guy from Boston (the one that got away). Oh my, I feel guilty for saying that!! Hubs know they are here, and he never comments. I have raised his boys, whose mother was the first and eternal love of his life, and that is a walking love letter.
Next time maybe I should email you. I am such a negligent blogger!! ;-)
Have a happy week, Mary. And yes, my grumpy feelings must be a result of the seasons changing...everything changing...
Much love,
Jane
Hello Mary, I'm glad to be home but I did have a great time visiting family in Mi. More about that later.
ReplyDeleteI read several of your posts and of course I love your great finds. You are a great shopper as you scope out theses wonderful buys. I love the bowl today. It has a wonderful vintage look about it. A treasure in my book. It is nice that you see Vanessa often. Give her my love.
I am going to say goodnight my friend. I am still catching up with some needed rest.
Love xoxo, Jeanne
The pattern looks a lot like the plates you bought. At first I thought that you had found a matching bowl! I would love to have the time to go out and search for vintage finds, but for now that is not to be. There is too much to do outside from all the rain we had!
ReplyDeleteI did have a lovely bowl and pitcher and more, once upon a time. It was green and white patterened with big pink flowers. We went to an auction and got the large bowl and pitcher, the slop jar with cover, the chamber pot and a small pitcher all for $40.00. The pitcher had a nick out of the lip but I hid it with a bouquet of flowers. I loved that set - I had it on the window seat in my den. I lost it in my home fire.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely piece! I would have bought it in a snap too. I love the softness of the bowl (if you understand what I mean).
ReplyDeleteHugs ~
