Following my recent post on the classic fabric damask, many of you concurred that it was also a great favorite when you are searching for decorating fabrics. Designers have recently looked to the past in order to revive one of the most loved of fabrics, brocade. Damask and brocade are both made on a jacquard loom. Damask is a flatter patterned fabric, which is reversible. Brocade is richer in texture and often uses several colors. Brocade designs look best on the top of the fabric surface. Because of this, brocade fabric is often used for opulent dressy garments such as ecclesiastical robes and evening wear. Brocade is only rarely reversible with most designs looking best on the top face.
If you are familiar with the company Brocade and have seen their stunning catalogs, you will know that both damask and brocade patterns are being reproduced in many types of decorative accessories and furniture as well as fabric. Lately I've seen these patterns on items in local shops also, some still have the traditional look, others have a modern twist giving an almost contemporary appearance.
Above and below, plates and storage boxes from Brocade.
Pretty covered notebooks...........

Below, linen fabric lampshades with a more modern look seen in a local shop.
Don't forget...............one can never have too much fabric.

ReplyDeleteAs to having too much fabric...you are right, never!
Just wonderful Mary! I do remember seeing the baskets at Homegoods. So pretty!! And yes... a woman can never hsve too much fabric! hugs and kisses, Vanessa
ReplyDeleteThanks for explaining the difference in the fabrics. All the things you showed us are so pretty! I love Homegoods, too. I have to go there every couple of weeks or I go into withdrawal.
ReplyDeleteI need to find this catalog. Forgot to mention one of my other weaknesses are vintage hat boxes....I'm so fortunate to have many from my aunt, complete with vintage hats inside!
ReplyDeleteBut I love these "storage boxes" at the top of your post. If you have the info for this catalog, please let me know.

Mary...like I said, maybe I need to stay away from your place! lol
ReplyDeleteDon't bother to send the info for the Brocade Catalog. Already found my way there AND....I've ordered those lovely "storage boxes." You neglected to tell us they're on sale for $29...from $49! That made them even more enticing for me.
I also ordered another item from them.....when they arrive, I'll share it all on my blog.

You are most certainly correct. Damask is returning big time, if it ever left. I was at the design center this week and so many lines are showing new damask wallcoverings. And, they are flocked! Not too sure about that.
ReplyDeleteMary, I too have been in love with the damask patterns for a couple of years now. I just love them all & got inspired to do that lampshade in damask earlier this year. It really just draws you in. I'd love to have more in my home. Thanks for stopping by to see me!

It's all luxurious and heavenly.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on ordering a chair for our bedroom soon, and I love the brocade look. I want the skirt gathered though, and I think the brocade is way too heavy. I can't wait to go fabric shopping.
Are you familiar with Dexter's Furniture on Glenwood? That is where I plan to order my chair.
Mary,
ReplyDeleteThose storage boxes are gorgeous.
I love china with writing on it too.
We are kindred spirits.
Happy Sunday.
