Have you crossed an ocean by liner? Yes, they were called 'ocean liners' at one time, not cruise ships. I've never taken a cruise, but I did cross the Atlantic on one of the greatest of the ocean liners ever built during the golden age of elegant transatlantic sea travel. One always dressed to travel back then.........................in high heeled shoes and silly hats. This was my favorite coat - a royal blue textured wool, and I loved those shoes. I thought I looked quite snazzy for traveling home to England!

February 23, 2006 the new RMS Queen Mary 2, on her way to Mexico, saluted her predecessor RMS Queen Mary at Long Beach, California where she has been a tourist attraction since her retirement in 1967.

Mary, I love your picture of you on the ship. You not only look snazzy, you are so pretty. What great memories you have of traveling. I love to go on cruises. It is the ultimate in entertaining and being served. In fact I am ready to go now! Smile!
ReplyDeleteLove ya, Jeanne
What an adorable picture! You are TOO cute!!! Snazzy is right...this looks like a magazine shot.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday! :)
Mary!! You're soooo gorgeous!! Always!! Love that picture! What an adventure! My dad also traveled in one of those and the trip last about 11 days! Gosh! Love,

Mary:
ReplyDeleteYou look beautiful for your wonderful adventure on board that ship. I would love to do that. I have only been on a couple cruises and I love them. I keep telling Heidi she should take an ocean liner to come home. She hates to fly now. I love your coat and shoes.
Nancy
Haven't things changed so drastically ? People don't dress up to go anywhere now , not even to church .
ReplyDeleteYou look so stylish Mary !
What a wonderful experience for you, and you do look quite the high-fashion traveler.
ReplyDeleteI loved those days when we used to dress and coordinate so well.
Mary, I think you look snazzy too! In fact, you remind me of the opening scene of the Mary Tyler Moore Show - are you about ready to toss that hat in the air?*Ü*
ReplyDeleteI would love to cross the seas in an ocean liner! Might have to add that to my list.
I agree with Theresa, I miss dress up opportunities AND hats...
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou do look so stylish in the picture. Thanks for sharing those memories with us.
Diane
Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou are ever so elegant.
What a lovely picture.
Have a great weekend.
Melissa
Mary,
ReplyDeleteP.S.
I wanted to thank you for your kind words about my mother.
That meant so much to me.
Love Melissa
You look so beautiful! And crossing on the Queen Mary...How exciting! I always wanted to travel across the ocean like that. I did get to stay over night on the Queen Mary once. That was a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteJust the right outfit Mary!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to remember those days of dressin for occasions.
Mary, You looked so glamourous. How long did it take to get back to the UK?
ReplyDeleteMy parents have just arrived back home from a Mediterranean cruise on the QE2 which is being taken out of service this year.
You were so cute, Mary. And pretty darn snazzy, all dressed up for sea travel!
ReplyDeleteMy mother toured RMS Queen Mary, in Long Beach in the late 1970's. She loved it!
Pat
That is sooo cute! I remember "dressing" to take my first flight! I think I was 15 or so...
ReplyDeleteOf course, when I was in high school, we were only allowed to wear "pants" to school one week a year - Rodeo Week! How times have changed...
Colleen
That picture of you is just darling!!
ReplyDeleteM ^..^
Wow, you looked like a movie star! I can see why you loved the coat and shoes! A little like Marlo Thomas' "That Girl" ...tres chic! What a fantastic adventure that ocean liner trip must have been!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend,
Christi
What a wonderful picture! Don't you wish everyone still traveled in style like that?? You look like you'd be right at home on the boat with Cary Grant in An Affair to Remember!
ReplyDeleteYou look so snazzy. What a wonderful trip that must have been. Did you see any of the QM's famed ghosts?
ReplyDeleteWhat fantastic picture of you. Very stylish indeed.
ReplyDeleteMy mother loved going by ship laces--the "only" way to travel but alas, those days are long gone adn she can't fly anyway--thrombosis and all that. No boats come out here as you can imagine!!
Hi again Mary....yes, that most surely is the Queen Mary you see on my blog. It's so fun to see your post here and know that you actually sailed on her! Wow.
ReplyDeleteThe office where I worked before I retired had a fabulous view of the QM just across the water from downtown Long Beach. We were all there the day the QM 2 came to greet the QM 1 - it was really very exciting. A few of us snuck up onto the roof of our six story building for a better view.
I never imagined on that day that I'd be reading about it and seeing it again on someone's blog...I never even read blogs back then! How exciting. I can look at your last photo here and remember it all because I was there seeing the exact same view.
OH, I just loved this, Mary! The photo of you is great and brought back those 60's memories for me. Love your hat....and I had a pair of shoes very similar and also wore my hair like that. We called it the "flip."
ReplyDeleteI've never taken a cruise, nor crossed the Atlantic by ocean. I would have loved to do this on the Queen Mary though in the 60's. I'm sure you have great memories from that trip!

What a beautiful photo of you from the past! Don't you look very Mary Tyler Moore too in that coat, hat and shoes. :) I dream of taking the ocean liner over to the States one day. I think it would be a fun thing to do but have to yet convince Jos of that. I was a baby when this photo was taken as I was born in February of this same year.
ReplyDeleteHugs ~
Heidi
You look so glamorous! Wonderful picture... :)
