They arrived early one morning, the professional crew who would build 'the great wall'. Actually it's a small wall but what a difference it makes in the front garden. This bed running along one side has always been a problem. While trying to keep the earth from eroding on the slope, it spent several years buried in ivy that eventually climbed the huge double trunked oak - and required professional removal! We then edged it with bricks, packed it with mulch, planted it with edging creeping and crawling plants. Nothing would keep it in place and looking attractive so a wall was the only answer.
Above and below, views of the wall constructed of Belgard stone topped with stepped capstones - comfortable enough to sit on if the party moves to the front garden!

Dear Mary! How lovely! I'm sure after all the work you've done past weekend everything must look just gorgeous!! Hugs and Kisses! Vanessa

ReplyDeleteHave been reading you now for awhile. Your gardens and decorating are beautiful. Love your new wall.

The wall looks so pretty and I am sure you are having fun planning any new items you would like to plant up here. I will be interested to see what you can grow well under such a majestic oak tree. I am having trouble getting an area under my maple to look nice. I finally have two things going well there but there is a lot of empty space waiting yet. It looks so nice to have the garden bench there in front of it.

The wall looks perfect - just like it has always been there. And, I love the bench.
ReplyDeleteYour yard always looks heavenly.
I love your wall. It really added so much to the space. You will have fun working around it I'm sure.

Good morning Mary
ReplyDeleteI love how your garden looks. What a lot of work to spread all theat mulch around! You must be so hapy with that new wall. It's beautiful and as you say a few things creeping over will soften the edge. Aren't you just loving the rain we are getting. My hubby and I sat on the porch last night with our glass of wine and just watched it pour down and afterward there was a full rainbow blazing across the sky. Absolutley beautiful.
Hope youhave a great day.
Hugs, Rhondi
Hi Mary , the tree area looks really nice. have a good day, don't work too hard .

ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your kind words.
Yes i am in Shenandoah Valley, VA.
We were expatriates in Singapore and Japan for 5 years; I have many English friends from my lovely Singapore days!
Thanks for your advice on the roses.
I had a New Dawn which i just loved when we lived in PA before we went to Singapore. It did well as it sounds like yours did.
I want to try the other climber you mentioned.
Someone else mentioned climbing peace so I found one of those cheap at a discount stores. At Lowes here the climbers are 35++ each.
Your gardens just look like I could come for a cuppa! I am so impressed you chose NC to make your home. I've enjoyed reading about your trips home and your brother's life in S of France.
We were lucky enough to travel to Provence last summer for a wedding in the lavender fields. It was an out of body experience, one I hope to do again soon. I see from your blog you also love to travel, as do we!
Nice to 'meet' you today.

Your yard is what mine wants to be when it grows up, although I'm pretty sure that dream will never come true. What a paradise!
ReplyDeleteFantastic front yard too. You work hard at it and the rewards are evident! Of course, you have decent weather to boot--a lot better than out there in the hot and dry of the West.
ReplyDeleteYour place looks very inviting, I must say. i could picture having a good tea there!

My goodness Mary!! Your yard is just beautiful, and the new wall looks perfect...I love stone walls too ~ You will have it so very cottage by the time summer ends!! You could have a wedding in your yard, Mary ~ it's simply stunning ~ xxoo, Dawn
ReplyDeleteThat looks really nice and will look even better when all the plants fill in and spill over. That was a doozy of a storm we had last night. We had a tornado touch down just a few miles from us!
ReplyDeleteManuela
That looks very attractive, all ready for the outdoor party! A shady area isnt the easiest to grow plants in, but there are some that will love it. I've put periwinkle and hostas in my shady garden.
ReplyDeleteThey did a great job! It's nice when things are done RIGHT, not just a bunch of stone piled up.It looks wide enough for extra seating at parties, also! The details in your garden are what make it such a wonderful retreat.
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteThe wall looks superb and I have figured out how to comment from Google Reader although I am not sure using the reader is really worthwhile after all. Maybe I will go back to the "bookmark" system to keep track of all my friends.
Take care,
Janet
Mary, the wall looks great. I love the way it completes your garden and has a look of being there a long time. Your lawn and Garden is so beautiful. Our yard is a work in progress because we have done all of the landscaping ourselves. It will be a while before we see results.
ReplyDeleteHappy gardening, Jeanne
ooooooh I love the wall! So inviting - just the look that fits in with you! Good job!
ReplyDeleteColleen
What a beautiful addition. So much to fun to have a new place to plant!
