he envelope bore a pretty English Christmas stamp. The Christmas card was a beautiful winter snow scene. The words from a cousin across the pond were thoughtful and full of good wishes.
But the other small envelope inside held the treasure. Several rather time worn photos of my mother and her twin brother, both deceased, and two of me as a child. My mother's brother's wife recently passed away, age 96, and my cousin found the photos among her possessions and kindly sent them to me.
My mother Gladys and her twin Edward (Ted) ~ no date on the back unfortunately, but I'm guessing late 1930's. Taken in Devon, England I'm sure.I love my mother's camel coat and wonder if she made it. She was apprenticed to a London dressmaker who made clothes for royalty. She became an excellent seamstress and tailor.
Receiving these long lost photos are the best Christmas gift.
Thank you David.
Please pay a visit to Deborah at Pictures, Pots & Pens, our hostess for Friday's Favorite Family Foto ~ there are always great photos of great family members being shared.

I love looking at old family photos and seeing how they dressed and looking for similarities. What a nice Christmas surprise.

ReplyDeleteDear Mary, these are the best type of gifts and treasures. What a wonderful photograph. You look so much like your mother.
ReplyDeleteI hope you girls make it to NYC today, and that the three of you have a glorious time.
That was so nice of her to send you these special pictures!
ReplyDeleteThey are priceless. It is very interesting about the coat....I bet she did make it!
I can imagine how you felt opening that card to find these precious photographs. It is a moment frozen forever in time. I am so glad for you that your cousin found them and sent them to you.
ReplyDeleteI found this post very touching as I just created a slideshow of the Christmas party I had here on Wednesday evening. I have been feeling sick since then and it reminds me of how precious these ladies are to me when I look at the photos. It give me the send that each moment of not feeling well now is very much worth it. You can see them on my NeedleNecessities blog.
Christmas hugs ~
Heidi
Oh, Mary! Such treasures you will hold close, I'm sure! I am so happy that you shared them with us.
ReplyDeleteYou favor your mother so much. They were both quite dapper. I can see where you got your sense of style.
Hoping you get to New York as scheduled and have a wonderful time.
Much love,
Deborah
Wow Mary, that is lots of snow. I hope it all works out for you and Jasmin.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of your mom and her twin brother. You favor your mom alot. Both very attractive gals. Your uncle is very handsome as well. This photo is a treasure indeed.
It would be fun to know if your mom made her coat. Her position as an apprentice to the seamstress for the English royalty is so impressive. My mom was also a very good seamstress. Back then they were trained to make their own patterns. She taught me to sew and at one time sewed everything I wore as well as for my girls. Men's clothes did not appeal to me for sewing.
Have a great day and I hope you do have a safe trip to N.Y.
Love...Jeanne

What an unexpected and welcome gift! I'm sure as you look at the pictures, you see the bits of yourself in them. I wish I had more photos of family in generations past. I have one of both sets of grandparents, and a couple that go farther back, but I would absolutely love to have more.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you that your cousin sent these to you. I'm sure you treasure them in your heart!
Hugs,
Lori
Your mother's twin looks like he could be a double to my mother's twin brother. My mother's name is Mary Jean, and her twin's name was John Marion. Love the photo!
