The house with blue shutters

I really don't know why I've become obsessed with shutters, especially faded, gently chipped, aged blue ones. I first realized that the invention of shutters was to "shut out" the heat of the day, and cool of the night, when in Tuscany a few years ago. Nothing excited me more than rising in the morning, pulling the windows in and then throwing open the wood shutters. Of course seeing the stupendous views beyond the windows didn't hurt either. Will have to dig out photos (pre-digital days) of that trip later. Hanging immobile plastic shutters outside American windows isn't really what it's all about!

Again I recall loving their look several years ago when I saw my dream house being built nearby - one of those multi-million dollar McMansions. Not that I would ever want a spread that huge (we cottage gals know what we really love), however it's a stunning French style house with lots of windows, each cozied by a set of gorgeous blue/green real wood shutters, complete with iron hinges and shutter dogs. I drive to this exclusive subdivision every now and then just to stare at this lovely home and the shutters!! Guess this would be an entry for the " 7 weird things about me" list.

While visiting my brother in the Minervois area of the South of France last Summer, I was in heaven - surrounded by blue shutters, most with that aged look. Then during a three day side trip to Provence there were more - here are some pics.

This building "HOTEL DE VILLE" (Town Hall) even had the perfect shutters!
Now these below I could actually view from inside as this is my brother's newly restored (four years of very hard work) 200 year old village house in the Minervois - I'm glad he decided to keep the old shutters. This window looks out onto the front garden. My granddaughter had just as much fun as I did opening the shutters.
Yeah! These are the old shutters I told you about - they were hanging about at SuzAnna's Antiques calling for a window to grace. Now they're hanging in the bedroom on each side of the bay window (yes DH did think I'd gone nuts, however he seems to like them too!), and I have my own version of the perfect faded blue, shabby shutters giving the room a bit of that old village look. I can at least look at them and love their chipped paint and wrought iron "dogs", even though I can't throw them open and see the 9th century Abbey and vineyards (like my brother in France), the olive groves and hilltop castle in Bagno Vignoni Tuscany, or the the red tiled roofs of Cortona, Sienna and Montepulciano in all those wonderful Italian hill towns.

Next project is to paint/age a wonderful old sewing machine table I inherited - going to use it here next to the bed in place of the round one. Also, have a sweet crystal "candolier" to hang in this corner above the table - aging it right now as it's too white. This is one of the pleated chiffon lampshades I made several years ago - can't part with it even though it's pale pink and maybe doesn't fit the new scheme perfectly. Perhaps I can come up with a new trim color!

  1. Love, love, love shutters -- and would love to put real working ones on our old home. Alas, we have about 25 windows!

In our case, they'd probably really help us be more energy efficient too. Hmmm... maybe this a good new-old-fashioned way to conserve energy? Perhaps you should start a grass-roots movement encouraging the use of shutters!!!

  2. Oh Mary, I love shutters, also!! Your photos are stunning! Love your bedroom shutters. There were french doors in our bedroom at the farm. I had shutters on either side of them.

The shutter screen on our back porch is made of shutters from a renovation of an old St Louis home.

  3. I had to laugh when I saw your blog today. Mine is about obsessing also. I have always loved shutters. My dream house is a little cream color cottage with robin's egg blue shutters. I love how you put your shutters in your bedroom. You know, that pink lamp really doesn't go at all...you should send it to me. ;o)

  5. Mary, those are great photos. Another shutter lover here! I'd love to have ones that actually open and close. I think they would come in handy during spring storms.

Those shutters look terrific in your room and I love the idea of the candolier. I can't wait to see how it all comes together!

  6. Mary, your blue shutters look perfect in your room! I love all those photos too of the blue shutters...maybe you need to frame those all together in a grouping, that would be so neat?!

  7. Mary, I would love to have those shutters on my front porch, but I have to say they look great right where they are. I love the color, too.
I've always been obsessed with shutters and stained glass and I don't have either! LOL

  11. Isn't this fun? Seeing all of these shutter-lovers in one place? I, too, adore shutters, and have quite a few photos saved on my computer of shuttered windows in France and Italy (in dreaming of my own trip there someday).

You definitely struck a chord with us today with your post. I especially loved your photos (and those lace curtains!), and what you wrote about all of us cottage lovers, too. We looked at larger houses about 8 years ago, and I discovered that I not only didn't want a bigger mortgage, I also didn't *really* want a larger house.

I really enjoyed your post today!

  13. You've got some gorgeous shutter pics. I saw a pic once that I would love to do some day. It had shutters on either side of the front door. They didn't close; just for looks with the little scrolly things. It was something different and very pretty. I have a pic of it but I don't own a scanner.

  15. WOW !!! Shutters. I LOVE them too. Part of that windows and doors things I guess. I have blue shutters on our cottagey farmhouse. They are not wood though:( . Do have wooden shutters on the kitchen windows though. :) And have the tiniest pair of shutters I am fixing to use in a project. Have a Super Weekend. Mary! So glad to hear the Fox Mommy was sighted :)

  17. Mary, your bedroom is so beautiful! I love all the colors, the shutters, and the amazing lampshade you made - don't change it - it's great just the way it is. You do great work. I remember the pictures of the other ones you made - all so pretty!

  18. I like your pictures of the faded blue exterior shutters. They really look nice. Having operable shutters on a house is really a great addition. I think you are right about the plastic shutters being somewhat of a letdown considering how much nicer functional shutters look. Exterior shutters are one of those timeless additions to a house that really make it into a home. Keep up the great work, I enjoy reading your blog.
