Found the little gold compass many years ago in my hometown in England. It sat in the window of a tiny shop named The Gold Shop which sold mostly estate jewelery. Knowing it would be pretty on a chain I bought it and wore it often. Now it's on a heavy gold chain which belonged to my friend Paula's late husband. While she was visiting last week and chatting about our planned trip, she handed me the chain saying she wanted me to have something to remember him by. Immediately I knew the compass had found its home...........it would point me in the direction and take me to the places that wonderful man loved more than any other in this vast world. He traveled to over 100 countries. I am soon to see the ones he loved best when I travel there with Paula.

This very special necklace will travel with me..................to places that were once "no place for a lady" according to Barbara Hodgson's beautifully illustrated book of stories about adventurous women travelers. In the book she traces "300 years of world travel by both celebrated and unknown women who endured bed bugs, scorching heat, exotic diseases, destructive thunderstorms, plagues of scorpions and many other life-threatening situations------------all in the name of adventure."
Am I scared-------------a wee bit!!!!
Note: The guessing game (see my two previous posts for clues) will close tomorrow and I'll name the winner on Friday.

Mary, what a beautiful story...your golden compass is beautiful and with Paula's husband's chain it is indeed a treasure of the heart. Your upcoming trip sounds very adventurous and it is so wonderful that you all going in his memory. I'm not venturing to guess where...(though I imagine it will be to some African countries!)...so let the travel diary go to one of your other readers. But I just wanted to say how marvelous I think it is that you and the other "Broads Abroad" (love that name you've given yourselves!) are doing this.
ReplyDeleteBy any possible chance are you heading to Victoria Falls?
ReplyDeleteI love the story of the compass and that chain is beautiful. You and Paula are so lucky to have such a friendship. My friend Maureen and I are like you two. We also love to travel together, and I just posted about a trip to France we once took. But back to you: I still think you are going to Africa! Where in Africa, I'm not sure......Can't wait to find out. -Delores
ReplyDeleteWell Eygip is in Africa...I was almost right! What an adventure!
ReplyDeleteI have traveled in Egypt with just another woman in the late 1980's .. All will be fine.. The Nile cruise is like watching a bible scene before your eyes...

ReplyDeleteHello Mary, I am catching up with my visitors from PS at last. Our dtr. left yesterday and my cousin Bob came back for a few more days. He is off visiting one of my sisters for the day. Yay!!! computer time at last. I have missed you and now I see you are planning another wonderful trip. I know you must be going to Africa. I quickly scrolled down so as not to see anyone's guess. I read your last post's clues. Thus my guess. Wow, 17 days is a long time. Have a wonderful SAFE trip. when are you going?
ReplyDeleteThe gold chain is beautiful and a treasure to have in memory of your friend. The compass is awesome and they are a perfect pair. Just like you and your friend Paula. Smile.
Love you and please be safe, Jeanne
What a precious gift. The gift of travel together with special women in your life will definitely create memories forever. I am guessing Egypt. Why, I don't know, but it is fun to guess.
ReplyDeleteMary, the compass is such a special piece, but hanging from this sentimental chain makes it even more so. I know you are going to have some wonderful adventures ahead. Happy Travels!
