This weekend's loss of many lives, terrible injuries, and devastation from the horrendous flooding in Funchal, capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira, hit home here! We have very dear friends who live part of the year on the island. Knowing they went there before Christmas, we weren't sure if they had returned to their Welsh home yet. Today I was relieved when they answered their phone in Wales having returned there just one week ago. As far as they know, their Funchal home and family members are OK.
News reports state that the infrastructure of Funchal is decimated from the tons of mud, boulders and torrents of water which came down from the hillsides and were carried through the city. It's feared many people were swept away into the ocean.
As the death toll rises, please pray for the people who have lost their loved ones, homes, businesses, and for the many who are suffering from severe injuries. Madeira is a popular Winter resort for Europeans so many of the injured are most likely from other countries.

Mary, I, too, am glad your friends are safe. I had seen this on TV and although did not know anything of this beautiful sounding place, I was so pleased to read your post. I did definitely send up a pray for the intentions of those folds. It it just another example of how much we are the Body of Christ. thanks for a great post. Loved your previous one too. Makes my eyes water to see those irritants.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad your friends are ok. It seems that so many things are happening, and I wonder with all of this snow what will happen when it melts! Let's hope that not too many places were destroyed as those pictures are lovely.

I knew nothing about this and in fact I will have to go look up Madeira.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to have to report that it looks like ND, Fargo in particular, will have to go through the same type of devastating flooding that it did last year.
