In the grand scheme of things, old leather bound books catch our eye and cause a gasp...................but remain on shelves, peppered with dust, unreadable, just resting in their glorious beauty, tempting but unattainable.
This is what I feel like doing today ~ I would be happy curled up on a sunny window seat, surrounded by my new gift books, a cup of warm herbal tea at hand.
Books in Winter ~ Jessie Willcox Smith. What shall I read first? There are so many to choose from. A little book on Porches from my daughter - you all know about my love of the porch, that great American icon.
The dustcover notes state ~ "The porch is a bridge between the interior life of the home and the world outside - a place to quietly reflect on the day, sit with neighbors and catch up on their news, linger with friends, or be alone with your loved ones and your dreams." Perfect.
Provence Style. Mostly lovely photos to sigh over ~ houses, landscapes, interiors, details. I hope to return to Provence later this year - I want to take photos as lovely as these.
"Freeing your life with words" ~ POEMCRAZY ~ this has to be the perfect book for bloggers, after all we love words even more than photographs, don't we?
"Jubilant . . . More than an instruction book for tapping the creative and beginning to write, Poemcrazy is also about being alertly alive. It is a field guide to imagination. Inspiring, short meditations on scenes or events . . . spark new ways of seeing." (Chico News & Review).
So...............to me this little book, and a great camera, should get one through this often complicated life.
If you've never read Marlena De Blasi's books you are really missing amazing stories of travel, cooking, romance and love. A Thousand Days in Venice and A Thousand Days in Tuscany are so enchanting - books I will return to again and again for their stories, and her earthy writing.
Her new book, a gift to myself, The Lady in the Palazzo, promises even more delicious reading as she, and her Italian husband, move on to Umbria, still searching for their true home.
And, last but by no means least, this tiny little book slipped from crumpled tissue in a large gift bag.........and changed my life! What a special gift from my special friend Su. Excerpted from the bestselling The World According to Mr. Rogers ~ yes, that Mr. Rogers, of "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" ~ this is a book everyone should read, it's amazing. Fred Rogers has left an enduring legacy, be sure to read either version....and this tiny one will only take a little time if you are really, really busy.

Are the antique books in the first photo yours Mary? I have a real thing for old books! I am also really intrigued about the pretty needlepoint pillow? behind the Mr. Rogers book. Can we see more about it and also hear if it is one of your own creations??? You know that family members are very nosey. :)
ReplyDeleteHugs ~
Heidi
The books at the top of the entry are just beautiful! I too love to read! These books look wonderful! I have never even heard of the Mister Rogers book before. I have to tell you though, the needlepoint behind it is so intriguing. Is this something that you created?
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there was a book of Mr. Rogers. I sing his song a lot when we are out and about. I am very sorry to say, in all the moving we did with the Air Force, I got rid of most of the books my Dad had. What a sorry mistake that was. We just had so much to move around everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI love the bear needlepoint. We are very partial to bears in our family. My Grandaughters called their Grandpa Bear.
Tea on your porch sounds too good.
Hello Mary, thank you for posting a picture of the back of your Torquay plate. It is a weird fascination, but one nevertheless. The marks on the back of old ironstone, are particularly beautiful, as well as informative. So today you have landed into another of my favorite things, books! I have been interested in My French Life, so will be looking forward to hearing what you think about it. I saw the Provence book in a shop, and liked it very much, but got one on Carl Larsson instead.

Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful day in the neighborhood isn't it? I just love Mr. Rogers. He had such a kind and gentle way about him. I'm going to look for that book. Thanks for the recommendation.

Hi, Mary,
ReplyDeleteWe have a window seat in our dining room but it has never been used as such because it is not comfy. I use it as a display area instead.
But I do have two new fluffy throws, Christmas gifts from sister and hub.
You know I love "Poemcrazy" (it's on my sidebar) and I am really enjoying Marlena DeBlasi's book. I am off now to check amazon.com for "My French Life."
I'm one of those odd people who never liked Mr. Rogers (I know, weird), but if you recommend the book I will check into it.
Happy and cozy reading,
Julie
The old books at the first photo are
ReplyDeletevery wonderful.I love your needlepoint pillow with the bear.
It's selfmade?
Have a nice day
Regina
Heidi and Kristen - I wish I could have stitched the bears! It's a tapestry fabric purchased as a panel some years ago - I made it into a pillow for Jasmin's bed here and although it's "a bit babyish Grandma" we still keep it around. The reverse is a green damask so I turn it over when we use this as our guest room!
ReplyDeleteBooks, books, beautiful books! You have a wonderful selection there. I see two or three that I am particularly interested in and did not know about before today! Enjoy your special friends....
ReplyDeleteThank you for shairng your good reads! My pocketbook will be smaller, but my bookshelf, heavier! Can't decide which one to get first!Hmmm

I love books of all kinds and can never have enough. Thanks or the heads up on the Mr Rogers book. I loved Mr. Rogers and would often watch by myself when the kids were actually napping. He was such a calm and soothing person and I miss him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the second Jesse Wilcox Smith picture in as many days.
Janet
Hi Mary. I love books too and I love the look of books. Thanks for the suggestion of some new books for me to read. It is always so enjoyable visiting you. I always click on your blog with anticipation, wondering what you are going to show us or say today. I am never disappointed! Rhondi xo
ReplyDeletePoem Crazy - what a wonderful little book - I finished it off on a long plane ride sometime back. Great writing exercises!
ReplyDeleteWow,
ReplyDeleteYou got some wonderful books. I got For the Love of Old last Christmas. I love it of course.
I need to buy the French Life book.
Enjoy all of them.

Hi Mary! Thanks for telling us about Mister Rogers book, I picked it up at Borders and didn't buy it, now I'll have to go back for it. I used to watch him all the time after school when I was a little girl...I have very fond memories. And I love the old books you pictured first, they are so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteRose
Mary,
ReplyDeletePlease stop by to see me; I have something or you :>)
Janet
Books are my favorite thing. I read on my boring old couch or in bed at night-or on the bus or metro. I always have one in my purse. If you come to Provence and are anywhere near Aix or Lourmarin, let me know. We could meet for a cup of tea or a glass of wine!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love books! Sometimes, the older they get, they begin to tell their own story...
ReplyDeleteWith all the television shows my children watched, Mr. Rogers was my favorite! He took me places and I always came back knowing something I had never known. I know that some people made fun of his simplistic speech, but to me, that was his appeal. There were no frills; just lessons and discovery.
I had just looked at a photo of "My French Life," and wondered what it was about. Of course, I love all things French so I'm sure it would be fascinating.
Finally, "Poemcrazy" really grabbed my attention. My affair with words and photographs, which obviously appealed to me in the shape of blogging, would certainly be satiated with a book like this!
Thanks so much for this stimulating post!
Tootles, KJ
P.S. Speaking of words, your blog led me to a site that listed British phrases and slang. It was quite an education and very humorous. I don't think that I have ever seen so many words for the male appendage! LOL!
Wonderful selection of books Mary. I love window seats ~ perfect little book reading nooks :-}
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful reading weekend.
Good Morning, Mary
ReplyDeleteI have the Provence book, and it is one of my favorites. I got it at Anthropologie years ago. The pictures have come in very useful as we are building our house. I have taken it to my architect several times. It will have a European country look to it. I also have a real love for Mr. Rogers. He has another volume out now, too. I actually enjoyed watching him when my children were small...and think he was a great role model in the way in which we should speak to and teach children. Did you know he was an ordained Presbyterian Minister, and he felt like this was his calling from God?
I just bought 4 old garden books YESTERDAY...we must be on the same wave length....
ReplyDeletelet's chat
I love books, old and new! No window seat, but there is a glider love seat in the bay of the master bedroom, that is almost like a window seat. It's a wonderful cozy place for reading or napping. My favorite reading place is one of the wing chairs in the hearth room.
ReplyDeleteYou have some treasures, Mary!
Pat
Hi Mary, wow You must have been good to get so many wonderful books! I too love porches! Just pop over to my place to see my latest post on...porches or verandas as we say. This high up in the north we need to cover the porches with glass!
ReplyDeleteLiisa
Mary, your books are beautiful. Yes, cozying up with a good book is the best & I hope to take time to do that more often these days.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend...
Rhoda
I love the old books in the first photo, my husband collects miniature leather bound books and they are just beautiful. I always read more in the winter, there is something about curling up with a great book and something warm to drink.
ReplyDeleteOoooh...you certainly scored in the book department! What wonderful books! How is My French Life? I HAVE TO look it up at Barnes & Noble next time I'm in. I've heard good things about it. And For The Love of Old is my cup of tea, too. And Poemcrazy - that looks reeeaaally interesting. I'm going to look it up on Amazon in a moment. And you're right - Marlena De Blasi's books are a real treat, especially if you are one for traveling or dreaming of traveling. I didn't know she had a new book...hmmmm... You've inspired a trip to the bookstore! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMary, hello :>)
ReplyDeleteI came across your blog via my dear friend Heidi's blog after reading your suggestions on painting her mirror. I honestly cannot tell you how much pleasure your blog has given me. I have been gently meandering through it -for over an hour, now - exploring every nook and cranny - I already have a pageful of notes, books to read, blog references, ideas and recipes and that is not even touching on your wonderful nostalic illustrations from Jesse Willcox Smith which, for me, turn back the pages to a time when Listen With Mother was on the radio and the highlight of our week was a quick visit to the library on our way home from school.
Your book recommendations are very inspiring. I also wanted to ask you about the 2008 Journal you picked out for Christmas. Could I ask you where it from?
Sorry to ramble on but I wanted to just tell you that your blog has really made my day
Warm wishes Angela
Angela - thanks you so much for your generous comments - I love it when new people visit and really enjoy my thoughts and photos.
ReplyDeleteI do not see you having a blog (do get one and join our great circle)or an e-mail address, so am answering here re: the journal. Also don't know where you live but as you remember 'Listen With Mother' you MUST be British!
I purchased my journal at a Borders Books store (US) and I know blogger friend Deb in Canada received one (the other edition with birds - and beautiful too) from her daughter, also in Canada, for Christmas.
If you go to this web site www.andrewsmcmeel.com and go to Desk Calendars on the left sidebar, it will show both editions - perhaps you can order one from there.
Maybe you are in Holland if you know fabulous Heidi! Anyway, keep visiting, I'll always try to have fun and interesting things to share. If you want to e-mail me my address is on my profile.
Mary, your Sherlock Holmes powers have not let you down..haha! I am British and live in England. My email is:
ReplyDeletejohn.sweby@btinternet.com and I also have a picturetrail album if you want to peek at my stitching :>)
www.picturetrail.com/angelasweby
I definitely am a friend of the fabulous Heidi and hope to meet her and her mother,in person, in a few months time. What a joy that will be.
Thank you so much for directing me to where I might see and order these journals. My husband is a keen bird watcher and it's his birthday soon :>)
I'm still swooning over your blog entries. I daren't start a blog, I spend so much time looking at the other beautiful blogs, chatting with my groups and trying to fit in some stitching, I would never get anything done arond the house. I'm not a very good time manager - although, I was in a previous existence BC (before children..haha)
The warmest of wishes and thanks Angela
(Just off to comment on today's entry - I just love those illustrations!!)
