Why do we sometime turn head over heels to collect certain things? Who knows why a certain something grabs our fancy and before we know it, one turns into two, two into half a dozen and suddenly we have...........a collection. Now I don't have anywhere near a collection such as blog friend Nancy - do visit her if you are into snowmen - they are memorable and utterly adorable.
A few years ago I started collecting what I call my "little uglies". These jester guys are always smiling and I just love the details of their clothing - that's what caught my eye. Being a seamstress, and loving fabrics, brings admiration for even small items such as ornaments. I bring them out at Christmas to hang out with Morgan le Fey and Santa - see previous post - and they make me smile too!
This year other ornaments and glittery things seem to have taken the place of these characters - I've not come across a single one in a store........................looks like my collection is complete!
Now, I won't even start on the Dicken's Village houses..................................that's the collection so many of us started about 20 years ago. They were adorable but drove me nuts trying to figure out the wiring configurations to get them all lit up without having them fall off the mantle, china hutch, or the top of the armoire - I have horror stories to share over hot chocolate if you want to pop over! My little cottages (guess that's why I really liked them - they were cottagey) are worth more now than when new - real live collectors want them, especially the discontinued ones.
They are packed away for now, along with the bottle brush trees, the mirror ice rinks, the town gazebo, the faux snow hills, and all those people scurrying back and forth doing whatever Victorians did at Christmastime - someone else can decide their fate in years to come. They will perhaps become that someone else's collection.

Mary,
ReplyDeleteI love the jesters, and their faces are sooo real, like someone I'd run into while shopping for groceries - ha!!!
And about your Dickens Village....well I had to chuckle because I'm only at the beginning of collecting. I only have 2 cottages...my husband started getting me one at Christmas two years ago....so I'm really looking forward to seeing what he'll bring home for me this year! I'm sure your collection is just beautiful! Enjoy your day!
Hugs,
Rose
Oh your Jesters are so cute. The faces are so interesting. Glad you found a place to display them.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary ~
ReplyDeleteThese jesters are very popular here. They are imported from Italy and many are handmade and pricey. I did not realize they were sold in the US. I love the one hanging on its head. :)
I have a very special village as it is one my mother and sister painted for me. I still have to start putting it up but know what you mean about fighting with the cords to get it lit. I got rid of my snow blanket this year and am trying real snow. I hope I won't regret it. ;)
Are you having a nice weekend? I am off to eat some fish lasagne and get our Christmas tree started. It is now up with no lights.

How cute - really, they are CUTE!
ReplyDeleteMary, I'm having a giveaway if you would like to enter!
Hugs,

I have not put my Dickens' Village pieces out since 2005 and that year, I found myself waiting until Christmas Eve day to do it. I realized that I hated it. Not the village, but all the work it entailed. So last year I didn't do it - though Dan was disappointed, and I am glad I didn't because three-month old Gracie would have destroyed it (I put it on the window seat in the dining room), and she still would destroy it this year.
ReplyDeleteP. S. Don't tell anyone (Dan) that I sold a lot of the pieces on eBay back in 1999. He didn't even notice they were gone. You think at first you are going to get them all and then the company gets greedy and puts out half a dozen pieces a year. No way.

Hi Mary.... just passing by to catch up on your last posts, which are always a delight to read. It's good to see you again.

I have a friend that collects those jesters as well.
ReplyDeleteI always tease her that they come alive at night while she is sleeping.

They are very cute, even with those ugly little faces. I don't have any collections for Christmas except some little nativity figures, about 3 inches high, that I bought at a brocante. They used to put them in cakes in France, now they put cartoon characters.
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny cause I've been thinking for collecting those little houses a doing the whole Christmas village thing! I just don't know where I would set such a thing up.
ReplyDeleteYour jesters are so adorable! I love their cheery faces!
