The huge double-trunked, dangerously leaning oak, on the side of our property was taken down on Monday..............................our neighbor is sighing with relief no doubt!

.....................followed by the three large trees on each side of the driveway whose giant roots have undermined and cracked the concrete (new driveway next Spring!). These I'll truly miss because the birds loved perching in them...........but our cars sitting under them suffered! The front porch will have no shade now so I'm hoping to have a large dogwood planted later. The birds will then have somewhere to perch again when they visit the birdbath and feeders, and we won't feel exposed when enjoying a glass of wine on the porch on a cool Spring evening.
Then they trimmed branches from several trees in the back garden......which mean squirrels' nests will need to be built closer to heaven!
Anyone want to send me some trees?????????

Jasmin's self-portrait taken as the trees came down.
Granddaughter Jasmin, like me, had mixed feelings about felling our trees - she looked much prettier than me Monday as we sadly snapped away with our cameras.......so you get to see her!

Hope you will have all of them everyday.
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010.

It is like losing an old friend. But glad you will feel safer with it gone. A doogwood will be very nice to fill the void. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteSad but much needed I am sure.. A new blossoming tree near the front porch will be lovely
ReplyDeleteDear Mary,
ReplyDeleteI know it was an difficult day for you all (((hugs))). But, I am so glad that you'll be safer.
Have a wonderful New Year! Chris
My condolences on the loss of your lovely trees ... but good that they are no longer a threat to life and 'limb.'
ReplyDeletePlease tell your precious granddaughter from me that she is talented ~ and totally lovely!
Happy New Year. Aren't you glad you are not in NYC as the snow flies again? It is snowing quite heavily right now in Bend ... with freezing rain and sleet to follow. UGH!
Hate to see trees cut down but they can be replaced.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo of Jasmin tell her please.
Happy New Year and hopefully see you in the Spring
Love
Jean & Mike
Happy New Year Miss Mary! I know loosing those trees is sad, but you would have been more sad to lose the house or a car, so it had to be done!! Hope you have a wonderful evening and we look forward to seeing you and Bob in the New Year!
ReplyDeleteDear Mary,
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about trees. We had to cut down our huge weeping birch out front because the bronze birch borer had already killed it, and our old apple tree just fell over one day after a heavy rain (thank goodness it did not hit the house). I don't know what would happen if we lost our giant elm.
Planting a new tree will be a wonderful thing to do - for the birds and you.
Happy New Year!
Jasmin looks beautiful even though she looks sad.
ReplyDeleteIt is too bad when trees have to come down. A couple years ago, my cousin helped me plant two. I had never tried that. They are growing really well. One is a Bradford Pear, and one a flowering crab apple. I thought sure they would take forever, but they don't.
Happy New Year Mary.
Nancy
Any tree that blooms in the spring is like a new awakening for the year. The old will be missed, but who knows what the new will bring....
ReplyDeleteI wish you and yours a Happy and Healthy New year!
Take Care
Ulrike
It is so sad when trees have to come down. But safety was an issue, so you know you did the right thing.
ReplyDeleteI will look forward to spring posts when you show us the dogwood that you will plant.

p.s. Happy New Year!
p.s.s. We hung the chandelier in our bathroom...I did a post on it.
Hi Mary, So sorry about your trees. I seem to take my shade trees for granted and would be lost without them! It's fun to select new things to grow though also. Happy New Year to you and your family and your beautiful grandaughter!
ReplyDeleteHerbal Blessings, Mandy
Jasmin look so beautiful in that picture. Looks like a double exposure. What a great idea for mixed feelings. blessings

Well, I am sorry about the felling but I will say your granddaughter is lovely, isn't she?
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say, dear Mary, thank you so much for your words of encouragements adn comments here and there when able. you are a blessing to me as is your blog. Thank you so much. here's wishing you all the best for the new year. Happy new year, Mary to you and yours.
Trees are beautiful. They give notice to the changing seasons.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a Blessed New Year.
Dogwood also has terrific autumn colour that lasts, so it's like getting two trees in one. Good choice.
ReplyDeleteAbout five years ago, my in-laws had to have their 150 year old Oak tree cut down from the front of their house. It had dropped limbs from time to time, they had it cabled at the higher points...it towered over the house and the fear was one day it would be in the house...so they had a crew come in and take it down. When the tree trimmers got to the halfway point, water poured from the tree (this was where it forked out) and we all said at the same time, "It looks like it's crying!"...and then we were all crying! Turned out that the water was where the tree had rotted and when they finished, there was a 12 inch rotten core through the entire trunk. So now they have about a 6 foot wide stump in the yard and Mum puts flower pots on it.
ReplyDeleteI have such a spiritual connection to trees. I just hate it when a majestic old beauty has to come down.
ReplyDeleteWarm woolly wishes for a wonderful 2010, Mary!
What a lovely photo of Jasmin! And I really like your new banner.
ReplyDeleteMy ex chopped down a big, beautiful lilac bush while I was at work years ago, because he didn't want to mow around it. Can you imagine??? I was SO mad at him!
It's always sad to lose trees, but I'm sure the future dogwood will ease the sting. That's one of my favorite post-winter sights, seeing them in all their blooming splendor!
I wish you a very happy 2010, Mary!
Hugs,
Lori
