After trying other places, the decision was made. Display the sconce in the dining room where it just seems to be at home.
This room is visible when entering the front door. It's passed through as one way to the kitchen and, besides being a place to eat, is often my desk, a room to sit and watch the birds visiting the front porch...........and currently is even the French classroom.
When I finally decided to buy the sconce this week, I was really stopping by SuzAnna's Antiques in response to their phone call regarding these amazing books.
Found at an auction last weekend, they knew immediately I would be interested. The three large volumes of L'ILLUSTRATION Journal Universel were published in Paris in the 1860's and each is a six month compendium of a weekly illustrated newspaper. Each book has almost 500 pages, hundreds of amazing illustrations, and are in wonderful condition other than some wear on the covers.

The sconce looks great where you hung it. It belongs there, no question. The book is so nice. Heidi would love that. Hope you have a good day, ours is rainy.

Hi Mary!!! I hope this really works. Normally I cannot get a popup window for comments while connected here at Cranberry Cottage. I have tried all this week again and it does not work but yours came up. Must be that line of friendship. :) I love that you did go get the sconce. I love it. Those books are a real find! I just adore old books. I have a Victorian magazine that someone had turned into a book. Enjoy all your new items for the house. I miss that I cannot comment like I normally can but we are having such a peaceful time here at the cottage that we are staying through to Sunday now. It has been a glorious week. Hope all is well with you too?!?

ReplyDeleteMary, I love where you hung the sconce. Your home is lovely. Nice job. I see you were lucky enough to purchase the books. Your description of the books and your photo is very beautiful. I love the way you displayed the book. You can change it around too. Are these books in French? If so, you better keep studying. smile.

ReplyDeleteThat book is wonderful. What a find! Is that an old trunk it is sitting on? I'd love to see more of it.
Have a great weekend, Chris
That sconce is absolutely amazing and it's clear to see that it had your name on it! What a perfect spot for it.
ReplyDeleteI also love your table display, with the urn and candle holders. I have to FIND an urn in France when I'm there to either take or ship home. Hope the markets will be good to me.

Mary,
ReplyDeleteI often have problems with Blogger when no one else does. This week it has been kind to me; sorry, but it must be your week!
Love those books. Isn't it amazing that something that old has remained in such lovely condition?

Hello, you may be able to 'age' your candles by using thin taper type candles and then dripping wax from another lighted candle down onto them, possibly in a lemon or cream coloured wax, to make it look as though it's been there forever ...we used to do it also down the sides of lovely shaped wine bottles filled with sand - making them into old candle holders - lovely for an autumn evening out on the terrace :-)
ReplyDeleteYou got the sconce! So happy for you! It looks lovely!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking books!
Love,
Deborah
