Trickling down my back, feeling like miniature rivers, the water pools around my waist, dampening my flimsy clothing.
HEAT - the scourge of Summer in the South. It arrives without fanfare, seems suddenly to envelope one's day quietly, welling up from the cool, misty dawn.
By high noon, it envelopes one's senses, slows one's pace and breathing.
By late afternoon it sears bare arms and legs even when lolling, useless and damp, in the shade of the porch.
I am melting.........bring me a river, a pond, a pool, the ocean......ice, water, water, water.

It was a very nice surprise seing you at SuzAnna's! That vintage sconce it surely is beautiful!! Stay cool!! Hugs and kisses! Vanessa
ReplyDeleteWe're having a heat wave here in NH too. 97 degrees today but no complaining because all I have to do is remember the awful winter we had.
ReplyDeleteThe words are fabulous the description perfect! Yes, summer has come to St Louis, too....in one fell swoop! Hot and humid. It was 90, earlier this week. I'm looking at 85, on weatherbug at about 6:30 PM.
ReplyDeleteIt seems we went from snow to storms to summer, with out a weather break!
The photo is wonderful!
Hope you are having a great weekend, Mary.
Pat
Your crusty vintage sconce reminds me of the vintage candlestick I got earlier this spring!
ReplyDeleteI am sweating just reading your warm discription! :P
Hey again Mary!
ReplyDeleteI'm in Fayetteville at the moment--a trip to visit my in-laws--and we're melting too!
You're right about me being a Wolfpack fan! And yes, I'd love to keep in touch. It's great to have new friends!
Becky
Now Mary!...I've been in this cool house all day and you just raised the temperature in here by 25 degrees!
ReplyDeleteWhew! Can you believe this? ...and it's not even summer yet!
Going to Roanoke Wednesday!
Hugs,
Deborah
Oh Mary, The heat has also hit us.
ReplyDeleteThe air is on, and it is still warm. We can't win I guess.
Nancy
Your words describe the heat perfectly - and the sconce looks like dripping water ..great visual!
ReplyDeleteColleen
Mary, I loved your description of Heat...you wrote it in poem form and it made a great impression while reading it!
ReplyDeleteIt made me feel even warmer than the 92 degrees it is here! Thanks also for stopping by my blog and encouraging me to continue writing. As soon as I get a camera I will be posting some pictures of my garden...if "Peter Rabbit" will leave my peppers alone! :-)
~Jean
I am so there with you. Hopefully this intense heat will back off soon. It's too early for these extremes. I can just see our grass searing.
ReplyDeleteYour post made me remember that I love spraying people with the garden hose. Not soaking mind you - just a gentle spray. My neighbor who has gone to be with God always was on the alert when he saw me with the hose.
Would you like to stop by and give you a nice spray?
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteWe are having scary weather here with thunderstorms and tornados brewing! I love your description here, what a wonderful writer you are!
Hugs,
Rose
Beautifully written.
ReplyDeleteWe have had warm weather here for a week, but never the heath you experience.

ReplyDeleteWe are in a heat wave, too! These Pa mountains are sizzling. Somehow your beautifully written post makes it much better.
ReplyDelete((hugs)) Rosie
Mary, isn't this heat just the worst?? I can hardly stand it this year...just oppressive.
ReplyDeleteOn a happy note, I just love your front porch! I missed getting in on the party, but am enjoying seeing all the festive porches out there. Your home is always one of my faves to visit, such vintage style you have. I love it all!
Rhoda
Yes, know what you mean--that is why summer is my least favourite season! At least here it often gets cool by late evening as it simply isn't as humid!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I just tagged you on my blog.
ReplyDeleteHi MAry . we worked outside this morning til about 11 o 'clock and when we were through my clothes were SOAKED ! I need some water too, hehehehehe !Have a great day Mary.
ReplyDeleteI don't do well in hot weather so I feel for you this weekend dear Mary! I dedicated my latest blog entry to you as it is about inventive ways to water your garden. If only I could think of inventive ways to give you water, water, water.....
ReplyDeleteHope your Sunday is a perfect day to relax!
Hugs ~
Heidi
Mary, it has been hot here in NC hasn't it?! We spent Friday and Saturday spreading out 65 bags of pine back mulch! In the heat!! I think we are crazy :-).
