I've discovered that my newly acquired secretary traveled all the way to North Carolina from Staten Island, New York. After buying her and showing her off on my blog, the gals at SuzAnna's Antiques heard from a gentleman who informed them that the secretary had belonged to his wife's Uncle Neil, and that she will be pleased it found a good home down South - how sweet is that?
So far I've done nothing to change her painted finish. English brother in Southwest France, who has a new second career painting furniture in his village, thinks perhaps I need to "shabby 'er up a bit more Sis". While I ponder reaching for a sanding block, and wait for dh to heal his very painful back strain from lugging her up the stairs, she remains elegantly in place in all her loveliness.
Florentine portfolio ~ French jars from Michael's, I added dried lavender ~ magnifying glass with silver handle.
The drop down desk is so sturdy - arms automatically come out to support the writing table and it is perfectly level. The little cubbies are home to my many writing papers, envelopes and blank journals, purchased usually when traveling ~ beautiful ones from Florence, Paris and England. I have always enjoyed writing and receiving handwritten letters and notes. The first 30-something years I lived in the USA I wrote home to my Mother in England at least once a week. She in turn wrote to me and I still have many of her letters packed away in a pretty box. In the '60's and '70's a 3 minute phone call across the pond cost $25! We didn't call much until the later years when international long distance became much cheaper.
The encre (ink), pen, sealing wax and fleur-de-lys seal came as a set in a J. Herbin box from France. This company has been producing inks and wax since 1670!

You have done a wonderful job 'shabbying' your secretary. I love the inside of the doors and of course, all the little arrangements of beloved objects. I must say I admire minimalists but I just could never be one! I also love the shutters and they have given me an idea for painting two metal doors at Thatchwick, one that leads out of the garage and one than encloses the area outside the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteMy granddaughters came to stay for the previous weekend. They are much ytounger than yours - 5 and 2 and a bit. It was hectic, but great fun! Have you seen Lauren Powell's books regarding shabby chic? They are inspiring! Go well, Eleanor at Thatchwick
Oh, what a lovely place you have now for writing and keeping such a dear petit treasures I absolutely in-love with every inch of it! I also like to see what you did with panels, it look really good. Now I start dreaming about same secretary, oh I wish I have similar place to write my diary and paint! So darling!
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteYou did a beautiful job with the inserts. I have several free standing beribboned bulletin boards of this type and just love them.
You have done an amazing display job as well. I collect sealing wax and seals but don't use them as often as I should.

ReplyDeleteI think it's fantastic that you found out info about where your Secretary originated.
Have a wonderful day!!!

The secretary is oh so charming. I love the way you have decorated it and have been thinking of making some of the same type 'bulletin boards' for my computer armoire doors. I'm sure I could spend an entire day at your secretary and all of her lovelies inside and marvel the time away!
ReplyDeleteMary, Oh my gosh how beautiful!! You have put much love into decorating this secretary.. it truly makes me smile :-}
ReplyDeleteIt's going to bring you much joy...
Hugs & love ~Mary~

Your new secretary is beautiful, Mary! I love the toile message boards that you made. The desk looks very inviting to sit down and compose a note or two! Well done! ~ Lynda xo
ReplyDeleteOh Mary! I am in love with a secretary. LOL! It turned out so beautiful and you should be so proud of your work and eye for detail. I don't know where to start. I love the pinboards you made for the doors. I want to make one of these in a frame and never make time for it. I think now seeing this I really have to soon. I love the accents of all the notebooks, papers and pens. I too love a hand written letter and we never take the time for them anymore. I, like you, used to write home once a week and say all the time how I miss bending over to pick a letter up off my doormat. We just don't bother in that way any longer and it is a shame. Perhaps it is time to try and get back to a real letter. We just become to hooked on the instant contact our computers offer us.
ReplyDeleteI have decided that my mother's room needs attention before she arrives and we have been looking at new closets and drawers yesterday. I want to start on it next week if I can get Jos that far. I am actually thinking of getting white furniture which is a real departure for me as you know. This inspires me to think it will be okay to do it as this looks so cozy and warm.
I am so sorry to hear that DH is still not well! Please tell him to get better very soon. I know how painful a back injury can be. Pamper him yet this weekend Mary and have a wonderful weekend yourself!
Hugs ~
Heidi
You have dressed her to perfection!
ReplyDeleteYou did her proud!
I just posted some new photos. I'm off to spend a week with Leah again...bless her heart - makes me feel so good that she wants her old mama up there with her. Laura and Kathryn are driving me up and Larry will pick me up next week. We'll be leaving in just a few minutes.
I'll be calling you when I return!
Hugs, Deborah
Mary,
ReplyDeleteI love the secretary and the memory boards. A perfect way to save and enjoy cards, notes, and photos.
Sorry to hear your dh is ailing. Mine is too, and sorry to say, I'm not a very patient nurse. Luckily his left hand is becoming educated.
Loved your blue shutters yesterday.
Hugs, Laura
So lovely Mary!
ReplyDeletePRETTY!!! (I have that exact same box with the Eiffel Tower on it. A gift from my wonderful mother-in-law, Linda, who also, by the way, took me to Paris!)
ReplyDeleteSharon
I love it! Ohhhhh, this is just so beautiful, very handy, and one of those loveliness corners which evoke only pure pleasure to sit at to disguise real work moments. Thank you so much for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteI love your secretary, too! I spotted the little seal and wax, and was going to ask you if you got it in Siena, where I got mine, exactly the same (including fleur de lis)! then I saw that yours is from France. I smiled as you answered my question.
