Then came October, full of merry glee..............Spenser
The eight month of the old Roman year.
By the Slavs this is called 'Yellow month', from the fading of the leaf, to the Anglo Saxons, it was known as Winter fylleth, because at this moon (fylleth) winter was supposed to begin.
Childhood remembrance...................picking Hazel Nuts along the lane on a brisk October afternoon in Devon.
Especially for Heidi in Amersfoort - colorful toadstools hidden in the woods.
My glorious beans now at their most brilliant on the front porch.
"That Autumn eve was stilled.
A last remains of sunset dimly burned
o'er the far forests - like a torch-flame turned
by the wind back upon it's bearer's hand
in one long flare of crimson; as a brand.
The wood beneath lay black."
............Robert Browning

Thank you so much Mary for thinking of me in this entry! I love the Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady. I discovered many many years ago when I was in high school and still look at it all the time. I feel blessed that I can actually see those and many other toadstools here in Holland.
ReplyDeleteThanks for always coming to 'visit' me and stay and talk for a while. I look forward to reading my comments. My mother's blog is up and I am so proud of her as she is struggling at times to do it. It is http://www.knittingpathsoflife.blogspot.com/ if you want to take a look.
I will be looking forward to the photos of your trip to England. I love England! My very favorite place in the world is Haworth in Yorkshire.

I thought those top two pictures looked familiar! Country Diary is a beautiful book. I hadn't looked at since the summer but got it out today and enjoyed all the beautiful pictures again. Your beans are the most glorious color. Isn't fall the most beautiful season - it has the best colors I think!

What a lovely post for celebrating this first day of October.
ReplyDeleteA lovely post today.
ReplyDeleteHappy October to you.

I treasure my copy of "Country Diary". It was one of the first books I replaced after losing all our books in our home fire. It must have come out the the 1970s, I'm thinking.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Browning poem. I'm going to copy it for my journal.

Beautiful October post. I loved the Autumn wedding card you hand crafted. A gift in itself.
ReplyDeleteJust love the 'Fireworks' -- mine haven't gone smokey quite yet...
