Into Africa

Wow, what a welcoming committee this would be. Told you there will be lots of cats. Just not domesticated, cuddly, purring kitties who climb in your lap asking to have their ears scratched!

As for why a measly 26 pounds baggage allowance and no wheeled suitcases?
I may be flying all comfy and spoiled rotten in Business Class on the long hauls, but once in Africa these are the tiny puddle jumpers I'll be squeezing into to fly to the safari camps. That duffel bag (along with those of the other three gals, remember, we will be the inseparable Four Broads Abroad) has to fit into somewhere on that toy plane - well it looks toy-like next to those huge cats, don't you think?
However, as Paula says, I won't be nervous because I'll be too busy looking out and taking photos of everything we fly over!

Flying over Africa......................nobody could ever forget the scenes from the movie Out of Africa when Denys Finch-Hatton takes Karen up in his open plane and they fly over the amazing landscape of Kenya. I'm re-reading the book, must be at least the fourth time, and you just know I'll be renting the movie again soon.

Other African movies watched recently -----

  • I Dreamed of Africa
  • Nowhere in Africa
  • Heat of the Sun
  • Flame Trees of Thika
  • Botswana: In the Footsteps

If you know of any others I would enjoy, please share titles and I'll get them from Netflix!

  6. Oh Mary......how awesome to see real live lions and tigers and leopards when you go on your trip. I love cats of any size and have always wanted a 'pet' leopard......silly, I know.

  7. Are you able to sleep at night with all the excitement of your trip? I can only imagine. I have been in the jungles of Thailand but nothing as dangerous as wild cats were lurking...just some skiddish monkeys in trees! LOL I can't wait to see your photos when you get back!

  8. How many memory cards do you have? I think everyone who reads your blog should send you one before your trip! Batteries, too! Love that first photo! Here, kitty kitty!

  9. I've flown from Jo'burg to Kruger in a small plane (though not as small as the one in your picture!)and it's wonderful. My young, competent and usually stoical daughter was terrified and I loved it. The views are fantastic from the air, I wish I was going with you.....

  10. Oh, I can already feel the anticipation along with you! You would love the HBO series "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". They only did the one season (7 episodes last year) and you can get the DVD through Amazon. I got it for Christmas and savored every moment, including all the extras. It takes place in Botswana; the characters are very loving and human and the production values are outstanding. Three thumbs up! (LOL). Hugs, Cathy

  12. "Out of Africa" is one of my very favorite movies of all time. I would love to someday see "The Flames Trees of Thikka". I bought Beryl Markham's book "West With the Night" but could not get into it. I will happily send it to you if you want it.

  13. You will love being on safari and you are going to great places. I have done this dozens of times and each time it gets better.Once you have been to Africa and sat under the Africa night sky, it is something that you will never forget. Have a "sundowner" for me.
